Southland Has Great
Potential For Cattle
BY M. L. OUTZ
County Agent
“The Southland has the great
est cattle producing potential of
any area in the world”, says
Bill House, president of the Nat
ional Cattlemans Association.
Mr. House spoke at the annual
S. C. Cattlemans Association
Meeting held in Greenville last
week.
Mr. House made some other
very important statements con
cerning the future of cattle pro
duction in the USA. Foreign im
ports, according to Mr. House,
are having a great influence on
the cattle market in the US. He
mentioned Australia as anexam-
ple. That country is encouraging
foreign industrial development.
This is due to cheaper labor.
However, there could be no cash
exchanged between the countries
except in imported beef from that
country.
Mr. House made it clear that
many countries except the USA
had practical import laws that
controlled and protected their
cattle producers. “Why doesn’t
our country have the same”, Mr.
House asked. The meeting was
very educational and one I’m
sure that every person attend
ing got a great deal out of.
Our annual 4-H Achieve
ment and Recognition program
will be held Friday evening, Dec.
13 at Presbyterian College din
ing hall Some 200 youngsters,
along with their parents and lead
ers, are expected to attend. I
would like to take this opportuni

New Gun Law Takes
Effect On Dec. 16
Sales of guns and ammunition
will be controlled under the new
Federal gun law which takes
effect December 16.
Louis F. Fisher, Supervisor In

Division of Internal Revenue for
South Carolina, said IRS is pre
paring material to help gun deal
ers, gun buyers and collectors
comply with the new Gun Con
trol Act of 1968 which was enact
ed by Congress in October.
Fisher said the new law should

FARM VALUE - Nationally,
the average value of an acre of
farm real estate was $178.00 on
March 1, 1968. For South Caro
lina, the average value of an
acre of land of farm real es
tate was $212.00.
BEEF CALVES - Many pro
ducers who have calves dropped
in January through March need
to make preparation now for calv
ing time. It costs about $80.00
to keep a cow each year. Thus,
each cow that fails to raise a calf
to weaning time cancels the pro
fits of 2-1/2 to three cows which
raise calves. All the County A-

ORCHARD DISEASE - To pre
vent spread of disease from one
tree to another, dip pruning tools
between trees in a solution of
nine parts water and one part
ordinary Clorox. Be sure to clean
and oil pruning tools at the end of
each day’s use.
CHRISTMAS COINS - Save
every coin that bears the date
of year you purchased your house.
At Christmas, this money can be
used to bug a gift for the house.
HOMEMADE COUPONS-
Homemade gift coupons are an
inexpensive but thoughtful gift for
children to give to their parents
or grandparents. Coupons might
read: Good for one car wash,
lawn mowing or other chore.
Make them with colored paper,
felt pens and crayons.
SHOE BAG - Hang a pocket
style shoe bag inside the hall
closet to hold guests’ mittens
and gloves.

for hunting, target shooting or
other lawful purposes.
Persons under 21 will be pro
hibited from purchasing pistols,
revolvers, and ammunition for
such weapons and persons under
18 will not be permitted to pur
chase any firearms or ammuni
tion.
Sales will generally not be per
mitted to out-of-state residents,
Fisher said, although a person
from an adjoining state can buy
a rifle or shotgun by complying
with certain provisionsof the new
Act. Sales to residents of a state
will be prohibited if possession
of the firearm is not allowed by
local ordinance.
Summaries of pertinent local
laws are being compiled in a
booklet to be mailed by IRS to
Federally licensed gun dealers.
The booklet, Publication 603,
“Published Ordinances-Fire
arms,” should be in the hands
of dealers before December 16.

fresh red cranberries. Now,

Don't Forget Your
Manners At Christmas
BY HELEN CAMP
Extension Home Economist
Christmas time is so much fun
that you just can’t keep from sing
ing! But how often in the midst
of the holiday music have you
missed some important notes?
Don’t let the Christmas season
throw your social manners off
key. Follow these cues to make
your notes as easy as do-re-mi.
“Thank you’s” for gifts are
the notes you’ll need to write
most often. You must write a
note if you’re unable to thank
someone in person for a gift.
However, even if Grandmother
lives in the same town, she’ll
appreciate a personal note from
you. Always wmte your note with
in a week after receiving a gift.
Sincerity is the most import
ant quality in a note of thanks.
If the yellow sweater CousinNora
sent you makes you look pale,
you don't have to say the color
is perfect for you. Instead, talk
about how soft the sweater is or
how warm it will keep you on
cold winter days. Remember that
it's the thought, as well as the
gift, for which you are express
ing your appreciation.
Try to make your notes sound
natural by pretending that you’re
talking to the person you’re writ
ing. Include some news about your
family or yourself, or inquire
about your faraway friend’s acti
vities.
Bread ‘n’ butter letters the
grace notes you send to your
hostess after an overnight or
weekend visit. It’s not enough to
thank Mrs. Jones at the door as
you leave -- or to ask Jo Jones
to thank her mother for you. You
must thank Mrs. Jones, in writ
ing, within a week after you get
home - preferably sooner.
As in a thank-you note for a
gift, you should keep your tone
natural and sincere. One excell
ent way to show your apprecia
tion for her hospitality is to re
call some of the highlights of
your visit.
While keeping in step with the
noteworthy tempo of your social
life this season, don’t forget to
keep your correspondence clear
and clean. Even the most proper
note-paper makes a poor im
pression if it ian*t sludge-free
and neat. Your notepaper may be
plain white or a delicate shade,
monogrammed or simply de
corated with a dainty floral bor
der.
In any case, write your notes
clearly with blue or black ink.
Your personal touch is what
makes this conversation on paper
“noteable” yours.
