Review On Players
BY ADELAIDE GANTT
Marrying off a 33-year-old
bachelor son and sending a
ounger one out to fling away
ois bachelor days is the way a
father can solve his family and
business troubles, if the father is
Mr. Baker inNeilSimon’s “Come
Blow Your Horn."
The three act comedy was pre
sented last week by Henry Lau
rens Players in the Black Magic
Theater at Presbyterian College.
It wasn’t a particularly brill
iant start for the Players’ sea
son but undoubtedly they will im
prove. Apparently, the Players
chose the wrong play and some
didn’t seem particularly enthu
siastic about it. That and sparce
audiences are not conducive to in
spired performances.
Long-term bachelor Allen Ba
ker, played byFrankSherriU was
as pleased with the approaching
marriage as was his father, a role
convincingly done by Bill Peters.
Young People
Enjoy Party
The Married Young People’s
Dept, of Calvary Baptist Church
had their annual Christmas
supper on Tuesday night, Dec.
10.
Mrs. Sylvia Ballew gave the de
votional.
The social hall was appropri
ately decorated with a Christmas
tree. During the evening, mem
bers and their families enjoyed
the good food and fun.
At the conclusion of the even
ing the children took turns at
breaking a snow man pinata.

Calvary Choir
Cantata Sunday
The Church Choir of Calvary
Baptist Church will present a
Christmas Cantata “Joy To The
World' by John W. Peterson, on
Sunday evening, Dec. 15 at 7:30
p.m. They will be assisted by
the Handbell Choir. Music di
rector is Mrs. Eva Land; or
ganist, Mrs. Frank Lee; and
pianist, Mrs. Vernon Trammell.
The narrator will be Richard
Foster.
Marriage would end Allen’s
bachelor days which has recently
become more burdensome than
carefree. For one thing, he had
begun calling all his girls “Con
nie* because Connie Dayton, por
trayed by Charlotte Reed, was the
one girl he wanted to keep and the
one he would surely lose unless
he married her.
Another result of wild bache
lorhood had been losing his job
in his father’s wax fruit busi
ness by forgetting an important
business appointment. To further
infuriate Mr. Baker, Allen had
finally convinced his younger
brother, who had just become 21,
to move out of the Baker family
apartment and in with him.
Allen’s aim had been to get Buddy,
played by Jim Lamb, away from
Mr. Baker’s strict domination so
he could grow up.
Buddy did more growing than
his brother intended, taking up
Allen’s playboy characteristics
and also getting fired by his
father.
To salve his hurts after firing
his sons, Mr. Baker tormented
his wife for three weeks until she
deserted him for her sons’ apart
ment. Betty Jean Shook, in her
first role with the Players, did
very well as the hypochondriac
mother who became "nauseous'
every time she answered the
phone and couldn’t find a pencil
to take a message.
Mr. Baker came to find his
wife and a family argument en
sued. In walked Connie Dayton to
tell Allen of her departure for
Europe.
During the confusion, Allen re
vealed to his father that he had
secured an order from a client
the firm had been unsuccess
fully pursuing for years. He also
asked Connie to marry him and
was accepted. Thus he regained
his job, along with some author
ity in the firm.
Mr. and Mrs. Baker, with a re
sponsible son to care for the busi
ness, decided to take a world
tour. Having learned with Allen,
they left Buddy to have his fun as
a single man.
Also appearing were Jean
Harris as Peggy Evans, another
girl friend of Allen and Janelle
Causby as the Baker brothers’
Aunt Gussie.
Bob Hanson directed the pro
duction, and Moe Guerrini was
assistant director.
