Halloween Witchery
BY HELEN CAMP
Extension Home Economist
Are you entertaining ghosts,
goblins, or witches this Hallo
ween? If little ghosts and gob
lins live at your house, no doubt
the excitement of Halloween is
already in the air. Now add a
few special items for both fun
and flavor, and the mood will be
set for a delightfully scary All
Hallow’s Eve.
First comes a pumpkin - no
Halloween would be complete
without a spooky Jack-O-Lan
tern! Pick one that is well shaped,
flattened at both ends, and rich
orange in color. The rind should
be hard - completely free of
soft spots or decay. Make sure
the stem is still attached so the
old fellow will have a handle for
his lid, and so the pumpkin will
have longer storage life.
. nra k -i-
Once the festivities are over
Mr. Jack-O-Lantern need not be
discarded, for he can be turned
into a sweet treat or a nutri
tious vegetable dish.
Plan to use a Jack-O-Lantern
within two to three days after
it has been cut.
PUMPKIN PIE
1-1/2 cups cooked pumpkin
fresh or canned
1 cup rich milk
1 cup sugar
2 eggs slightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon butter or substi
tute
Combine ingredients. Mix
thoroughly and pour into pastry-
lined pan, bake in hot oven at
425 degrees about 25 minutes or
until an Inserted knife comes out
clean. Serve with whipped cream
if desired or serve while still
warm.
JACK-O-LANTERNS - Here is
another Halloween idea. Make
your own Jack-O-Lanterns for
Halloween with packaged butter
scotch pudding. Simply combine
one package Instant Butterscotch
pudding and a pound box of con
fectioners’ sugar with 1/3 cup
each of soft margarine and evap
orated milk. Tint to the proper
color orange with drops of red
and yellow food colors. Mix to
make a smooth ball. Break off
pieces of the mixture and shape
between hands to make pump
kin. The grooves along the sides
of the pumpkin are made with a
spoon handle. A bit of green gum-
drop makes the stem and use
bits of black gumdrop for the eyes
and mouth. Refrigerate until
served. Makes seven Jack-O-
Lanters 2-1/2 inches in diame
ter.
ORANGES CAN BE USED FOR
HALLOWEEN - Halloween Party
Dessert: It’s quick and delicious.
Peel six oranges and cut into bite
size pieces; sweeten to taste.
Fold orange pieces with juice into
one cup whipped cream. Spoon
over ginger bread or cake
squares. Party Table Favors:
Large oranges make delightful
candy and nut cups for the table.
Cut large oranges in half, reem
juice from shell (save for break
fast). Line each shell with a
fluted baking cup; fill with nuts
or candy.
Goblin Punch: In large punch
bowl, combine 1 quart chilled
fresh orange juice and 1 quart
orange sherbet. Add 2 quarts
chilled ginger ale. Garnish punch

Who Will Support South Carolina for the Next 6 Yrs.?
Two men — Mr. Marshall J. Parker and United States Senator Ernest F. Hollings — are asking
the voters of South Carolina to let them represent our state in the U.S, Senate for the next-
six years.
One candidate says he is conducting a 75 day campaign. The other has served our state for
more than 20 years.
As interested citizens we believe that in these trying times South Carolina needs the most ex
perience and competent representation possible. We believe also that the best yardstick by
which to measure qualifications is the record of past performance.
We urge you to carefully study the qualifications of Senator Hollings and Mr. Parker and to
make your choice on the basis of which man you feel can best serve South Carolina.
