Here’s Solution To Holiday Space Problems
Dear Sally
If you have a space problem
in your house, sofa beds may
be the answer.
With this dual-purpose fur
niture, even small home own
ers and apartment dwellers
can keep their cool when un
expected guests arrive for the
holidays.
Of course, sofa beds don’t
actually stretch space. They
just seem to. With modem
styling, they are no longer the
heavy, cumbersome pieces
they used to be
Sofa arms have been slim
med down and the bulkiness
reduced, so the sofa or couch
takes up a minimum of floor
space In fact, these pieces so
cleverly conceal comfortable
cotton and mnerspring mat
tresses, you'd never guess they
lead a double life
There are various types of
two-in-one furniture Converti
ble sofas, for example, are
available in either love seat
size or davenport width The
convertibles are made with
the mattress folded under the
seat which pulls out to form
the bed In this type, the sofa
back drops down level with
the seat to make a double bed
The studio couch, on the
other hand, converts to a twin
bed when you pull the lower
section out and up to seating
level.
Then there's the single sleep
er, really a refinement of the
old daybed, but much more
streamlined in design It’s
equipped with a long, narrow
cushion called a bolster. Final
ly, there’s the chair bed. This
is just for occasional use, al
though it’s as comfortable as
sofa bed styles
Best of all, today’s sofas and
couches made with cotton and
innerspring mattresses are
every bit as comfortable as a
regularly equipped bed. You
can obtain as fine a mattress
as you want in a dual purpose
sofa or couch. The best buy is
an innerspring mattress cush
ioned with cotton. It has firm
ness and controlled resiliency.
A big person or a lightweight
can relax and get the right
amount of buoyancy.
Moreover, cotton cushioning
has a natural ventilating sys
tem that conducts heat and
moisture away from the body.
You stay comfortable all night
long.
With sofa beds, you can put
out the welcome mat for over
night guests—thanks to the in
genuity of the furniture and
bedding industries.

WITH GUESTS IN MIND—Even a small living room (8x9
feet) can accommodate overnight guests for the holidays with
this versatile sofa bed Covered in wide wale black cotton
corduroy, it fits in nicely with a bold color scheme of red,
black, and white. Colors in the poppy printed wallpaper are
echoed in white corduroy draperies with red trim, and extra
seating is provided by large square floor pillows in red and
black corduroy Photographed at the Chicago Merchandise

THREE-IN-ONE—Living, dining, and sleeping is provided
for in the same room, thanks to a space-saving sofa bed
Equipped with a cotton and innerspring mattress, the unit
affords comfort and resiliency for easy sitting and restful
slumber Cheerful floral-printed cotton adorns the sofa bed
and makes tie-back ruffled curtains. The reproduction of an
old iron Franklin stove does even better than a fireplace

HOW CAN I?
BY ANNE ASHLEY
Q. How can 1 deal with very
stubborn black soot .:*i smoke
marks or stains on a brick fire
place?
A. Try riving the faeinf an en
tirely new surface. Use a car-
bonundum block and rub firmly
all over the surface of the stained
bricks. Then, if the contrast be
tween these newly-cleaned bricks
and the rest of the facing is
very marked, go over the other
bricks lightly to give them all
a matching tone.
Q. Is there something I can do
about the removal of small scrat
ches from the glass tops of furni
ture 0
A. These can sometimes by ob
literated by rubbing over them
with a little toothpaste, then po
lishing off with another dry soft
cloth.
Q. How can I prevent spaghetti
or macaroni from sticking to the
bottom of the pan in which it is
cooked?
A. By lightly greasing the in
side of the pan before putting
the water on to boil.
Q. How can I make a gela
tin dessert quickly when time
is at a premium?
A. Mix the gelatin with only
enough hot water to dissolve it,
then use ice water for the re
maining amount of liquid. The
gelatin will set in just a few
minutes. Add fruit if you wish,
but be sure it is ice-cold.
Q. How can I clean plaster
casts?
A. Swab over them with cold
liquid starch, allow to dry thor
oughly, then brush it off, and
the dirt usually comes off with
the starch, leaving the cast as
clean and white as when new.
Q. How can I prepare a good
economical, antique-like stain
for pine wood?
A. Strong tea, diluted with a
little water, makes a very good
one. When dry, cover with two
thin coats of fresh white shel
lac, and when that has dried, wax
for a fine finish.
Q. Too often I get the use of
only about half of my tubes of
household cement, because it
hardens. How can I remedy this
situation?
A. You can keep your tubes
of household cement usable to the
last drop if, after using them,
you replace the cap carefully,
then put the tube into a small
screw-top jar, and close this
tightly.
Q. How can I remove rain
spots from velvet?
A. By spongingvytthcarboo tet
rachloride, rubbkig in one dlrec-
tin. My household-hints book
contains much^her such infor
mation on the care and clean
ing of clothing and fabrics.
Q. What is the best way to
caramelize sugar?
A. In a dry skillet in the oven.
In this way, it heats from the
bottom and top at the same time,
caramelizing quickly and
smoothly.
Q. How can 1 make an easier
and better job of cementing wood
and metal together with house
hold cement?
A. If you’U soak the metal
pieces first in acetone, being
careful not to touch the surface
after soaking, your cement wiU
make a good bond.
Q. How can I strengthen glass
ware and make it less fragile?
A. Put your glassware into a
vessel filled with slightly salted
water, which you then allow to
come slowly to aboil. The slower
your boiling, the hardier your
glassware will be.
Q. How can I prevent cream
from curdling in coffee?
A. When the sweetness of
cream seems doubtful, stir in a
pinch of baking soda, and this
will prevent its curdling in your
hot coffee.
Q. How can I remove smoke
stains from fireplace bricks?
A. Scrub the bricks with scour
ing powder, using only enough
water to make a soft paste. Rinse
thoroughly. After the bricks have
dried, their color can be en
riched by a brushing with lin
seed oil.
Q. How can I deal with shoe
polish stains on carpets?

LIME NOW - Farmers should
not overlook the fact that equip
ment is available to spread lime
at this time of year. This equip
ment will be tied up next spring
spreading fertilizer. Soil should
be tested first of all, but if no
test is available lime should be
added anyway. By all means lime
before seeding pastures.
SEWING MACHINES NEED OIL
- Directions are in the booklet
that comes with your machine.
Keeping your machine oiled could
save a service call by the repair
man.
CONTROL RATS - Winter is
the best time to control rats. The
anti-coagulant rat poisons are
good materials for permanent
bait stations. Rats will feed on
the bait for several days, since
there is no pain involved, the
rats will continue to feed until
they die.
TAPE TIPS HIM OFF - Iron
a piece of colored tape over la
bel at the back of the neck of
those older shirts that are frayed
at the collars and cuffs or are
patches. A small piece of tape
will do. This way he just has
to look at the label in the back
of the collar without unfolding the
entire shirt, to know if it is
a good shirt or a worn one.
PIG SALE - The next feeder
pig sale is scheduled for De
cember 2, at Saluda. At the last
sale held in September, No. land
2 pigs averaged 20.07 each or
over 34? per pound. Most pigs
go into parlors where they are
finished for market
BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: Do you think
that the fact that my high school
uses the honor system for its
examinations imposes on me the
responsibility of reporting one of
my classmates who persistently
cheats on all his exams? Several
other of my classmates know
about this, too, and we’re all
pretty well teed off about it We
all work hard for our grades,
while this no-good fellow coasts
through with the utmost of ease.
What do you think? BY THE
RULES.
DEAR BY THE RULES: I’m not
too much in favor of tale-bear
ing. And after all, the only per
son this fellow is hurting is him
self. Seemingly he’s getting away
with his underhanded methods
now. but you can be sure that in
time his sins will find him out
and he’ll be tripped up by the
proper authorities. In the mean
time, his lack of principles is
doing sad things to his popular
ity with the rest of his class
mates.
DEAR SALLY: My husband and
I always seem to have trouble
with late hangers-on at the par
ties we give in our home, peo
ple who seem oblivious of the
fact that the party is over and
that it’s time to go home. Is
there any tactful way in which we
can “nudge” these guests out?
HOSTESS.
DEAR HOSTESS: A little
“housekeeping” is one good way.
Cut off the drinks, begin empty
ing ashtrays and carting glasses
and dishes into the kitchen. If
this doesn’t get your message
across, then a little more than
“tact* is in order. Tell them out-
and-out that you’re tired and
would like to hit the pillow!
DEAR SALLY: I’m a girl of 16
who has just started to date,
and I need advice on a little
problem that has come up.
There’s a certain cute boy who
has been calling on me every
Friday evening, and we watch TV
together. The problem springs
from his habit of stretching out
full length on our sofa because
he’s “tired after his part-time
job in a drugstore.” Maybe so,
but I can’t say I like such an
“undignified looking posture* by
a young man calling on a girl
. . .and my parents also have
remarked on it in anything but
glowing terms. What do you say
about it? PATTY.
DEAR PATTY: I think as you
and your parents do. Tell the
young man that if he’s too tired
to sit up while he’s visiting you,
he’s better off staying at home.
DEAR SALLY: My wife has
been giving me a hard time a-
bout my drinking at various par
ties we attend. I’m not a com
pulsive imbiber, just a “social
drinker” -- but she thinks I
take far too many cocktails at
these affairs. I’ve tried to rea
son with her that alcohol taken
as I do, diluted in mixed drinks,
is not nearly so bad as taking it
neat or straight She claims I’m
not making good sense. What do
you say? JONESY.
DEAR JONESY: I also fail to
see any logic in your asser
tions. One or two ouncesof liquor,
no matter how much diluted and
no matter what it’s mixed with,
is still one or two ounces of
liquor.
