Cancer Society
Votes To Become
Separate Unit
In appreciation of Lie past sup
port and their desire for con
tinued aid for cancer work in
Laurens County, the officers and
board of directors wish to make
the following explanation to con
tributors.
It was the vote of the govern
ing board of the Laurens Coun
ty Cancer Society, unit of the
South Carolina Cancer Society,
to become a separate unit from
the state organization only after
the local unit was informed of
rules and regulations of the state
organization which could not be
met. Information was received
that unless the local unit have a
drive for funds in April it would
be dropped from the state or
ganization. The ultimatum was
accepted since there would have
resulted a duplication in efforts
at fund raising.
Since no amount will be ac
cepted by the state unit from
any local separate unit for edu
cation and research, the Lau
rens Cancer Society will have
twice as much money for the
needs of local patients. The full
amounts alloted to the local so
ciety in the drives in Clinton and
Laurens will be kept at home.
From this amount, however, will
come lending supplies which in
the past have been made avail
able through the state unit. These
supplies include hospital beds,
bed-rests, footstools, patients’
walkers, mattresses, bandages,
wheel chairs, etc.
It is earnestly hoped that the
people in Laurens County will
accept the status of separate pnit
as the officers and board mem
bers found no choice in the word
ing of the ultimatum, according
to Sarah Dixon DeLoach, di
rector.
Miss Zelle Crisp and Mrs.
Clara Wightman of Cross Hill
visited Mr. A. B. Crisp in El-
berton, Ga., Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Byars
of Greenwood spent the week
end with Mr. and Mrs. L. T.
Watts.
Mrs. Gene Carter is a patient
at the Bailey Memorial Hospital.
