Dial 833-0042 Duck Calling Contest Slated Near Wedgefield SUMTER - The first annual South Carolina Duck Calling Championship will be held Oct ober 19th at Burnt Gin on the Manchester State Forest near Wedgefield. The event, sponsored by the Sumter County Game and Fish Association in cooperation with the S.C. Wildlife Resources De partment, is being staged to pro mote the art of duck calling and is open to any legal resident of South Carolina over 16 years of age. Contestants must register for the event no later than October 1st. The competition will be limit ed to the first 100 applicants and the competitors will appear in the order of registration. The winner of the event will be declared the South Carolina State Duck Calling Champion and will become eligible to enter the World’s Championship in Stug- gart, Ark. Judging will be based upon the contestant’s ability to bring in simulated flights of ducks through the basic application of the four standard calls: (1) Hail or long distance call, (2) Mating or lone some duck call, (3) Chatter or feed call, and (4) the come back call. Contestants in all instances will be limited to call for one and one half (1-1/2) minutes and all overtime callers will be auto matically disqualified. Entry fee for the champion ship will be $6 and will include a meal for the contestants. One dollar of the fee will be donated to Ducks Unlimited. Interested hunters should apply for an application blank from Richard S. Lee, P.O. Box 923, Sumter, S.C., 29105, or the S.C. Wildlife Resources Department, I & E Division, P.O. Proposed Legislation Approved As Boost To International Trade The nation's railroads today endorsed the basic objectives of the Department of Transportation's proposed “Trade Sim plification Act of 1968.” Thomas M. Goodfellow, president of the Association of American Railroads, said the bill would help solve some of the “immense” problems now involved in international trade. “Solutions to these problems must be found so that there may be a freer flow of goods in our foreign commerce and so that those who export or import goods will have the kind of service they deserve, with fewer complications and less red tape,” Mr. Goodfellow said. He pointed out the bill would help by permitting U.S. car riers of all modes to enter joint rate agreements with foreign carriers for shipments from any point in the United States to any point in any foreign country and vice versa. The bill would also provide for the interchange and pooling of equipment and facilities used in international trade and would make possible a single through bill of lading—door to door -by all carriers participating in “through international shipment” agreements, he explained. Pharmacy Career Urged for ^ omen Pharmacy is a growing ca reer field for women in which they will find a rewarding fu ture, according to the U.S. De partment of Labor. Employment opportunities for women in pharmacy are increasing in a variety of areas ranging from research to a combination of science and salesmanship, the department says in a new Women’s Bu reau leaflet, “Why Not Be a Pharmacist ?” Carpeted Golf Course Opened In Tennessee KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The world’s first nine-hole golf course with carpeted greens and tees is open for business. Fore Seasons Golf Course, de veloped by a Knoxville realty company, features the latest in textile engineering -- outdoor nylon carpeting which has all the bounce, reaction, roll and bite of bent grass. Nearly 4,300 square yard of carpeting went into the making of the greens and tees, which are impervious to cleats and the in sertion of tees, and are play able in all kinds of weather. According to course profes sional Garnett Neil, the carpet ing provides the “best putting surface there is. No bent green will putt equal to it.” He added that the carpeting has almost eli minated costly maintenance problems which have plagued golf courses since the beginning of the game. Golf officialdom has also cast an approving eye on the new course. Playing in the opening round at Fore Seasons, Hord W. Hardin, president of the United States Golf Association, said he was very pleased with the carpet’s performance. Neil said the greens and tees were constructed and ready for play in only two months. Con struction of a conventional nine- hole course usually takes over a year. The greens and tees are built on plywood platforms which are covered with a layer of soil. The carpet is then placed on top of the soil, folded over the edges of the platform, and tacked un derneath. Fringe dirt is then pushed up to the sides. * * * At Wallkill, N.Y., a six-story circular office building with a restaurant on top is being built around the town’s one-million- gallon steel water tank.
