Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Row
land have returned from a vaca
tion stay in the Hawaiian Islands,
visiting Maui, Kauai, Honolulu
and other places of interest.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Stilwell,
Bradley, Byron,Blake,andBarry
of Houston, Texas; Mr. and Mrs.
Jimmy Stilwell, Crystal, Molly,
and Sylvia of Haleyville, Alabama
visited their parents and grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Stil
well, Sr. the past week. Mr. and
Mrs. Stilwell, Sr. and Jimmy
Farmer returned with the Jimmy
Stilwells for a visit.

Henderson are stationed at Cha-
nute AFB, Illinois.
Capt. and Mrs. Copeland Whit
mire are making their home on

will remain here while Capt.
Whitmire does a tour of duty
in Vietnam.
Maj. and Mrs. W. E. Freeman
and family who have recently re
turned from three years duty in
Ethiopia are making their home
on Chestnut St. Mrs. Freeman
will remain here while Maj.
Freeman does a tour of duty in
Vietnam.
Mrs. Fred Holcombe, Jr., re
turned Tuesday to her home at
Ft. Hood, Tex., after a visit
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert P. Hamer. She accom
panied Lt. Holcombe's parents,
who had veen visiting them and
the Hemis Fair and other points
of interest in Texas on their re
turn trip.

Cherry Renae Mann, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry H. Mann
will observe her first birthday
on August 8.
Mrs. R. J. Tankersley has re
turned from Asheville, N.C.,
where she vacationed with
friends.
Mrs. R. C. Stewart who has
been a patient at Bailey Memor
ial Hospital was transferred
Monday to Greenville General
where she will undergo surgery.
A daughter, Mrs. Victor Grill of
Greenville visited her during the
weekend here and another daugh
ter, Mrs. 0. B. King has been in
Greenville with her.
Mrs. Mary D. Lawter of Ma
con, Ga., spent the weekend with
Mr. and Mrs. George Black. Mr.
and Mrs. Butler BlackofAtlanta,
Ga., were also visitors.
Miss Sandra May, who is a
nurse at Memorial Hospital,
Chapel Hill, N.C., daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. William May of Clin
ton, joined by a friend, Miss
Elsie Goff of Chapel Hill and
Saluda left Monday for a three
weeks trip to London, Paris,
Copehagen, Berlin, Munich,
Rome, Niece, and Madrid. She
will return by way of San Fran
cisco.
Mrs. John B. Jordan and child
ren, Betsy, Trecia and John have
been spending a week with Mrs.
Jordan’s mother, Mrs. R. E. Wy-
sor. Mr. Jordan joined them on
Wednesday for the remainder of
the week.
Miss Sara Lynn Wysor and
Miss Mary Bailey Vance arrived
at Greenville Airport Monday
night from a tour of Europe.
2nd Lt. Darrell Orr, recent
Clemson graduate reported for
duty with the U.S. Army, July
1st, at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas,
where he is attending Medical
Field School. After training there
he will be stationed at Ft. Jack-
son with a dental unit.

Prater and Keith Brannon. Susan
Stevens of Florence and Shay
English of Hendersonville, N.C.,
also joined them.
They were met by other stu
dents and groups in New York.
While in New York they visited
Radio City and saw the T.V.
show “Dream House*.

valescing at home following sev

morial Hospital where she under
went surgery.

of Gainesville, Fla. is spending
several weeks with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. W. G. King. Her
son, Sandy Cruickshanks has been
here with his grandparents, most
of the summer, and will lie a stu
dent at P.C. this fall

from a two weeks vacation stay
at Garden City Beach.
ON TOUR
Mrs. M. C. Poole left from
Columbia by plane for New York
today where she will join a tour
and will fly on August 10 for
Curacoa Island off the coast of
South America. While there she
hopes to visit in Venezuela and
return to the states August 18.

of Columbia and Richard Julien
of Atlanta were supper guests of
Mrs. Fred Scott on Sunday.
Dr. and Mrs. James Walker

last weekend.

Fairmont, N.C.
COLUMBIA - The number of
people employed in manufact
uring in Laurens County has in
creased by some 161 per cent
since 1940. At the same time,
ttiere is approximately a 79.6 per
cent decrease in the numl>er of
people employed in agriculture.
These are some of the results
of a report published by the Bu
reau 'T Business and Economic
Research and the Bureau of Urban
and Regional Affairs at the Uni
versity of South Carolina.

The number of people employed
in agriculture in 1968 is 1,188
as estimated by the report.
Estimates are based on trends
ahd on 1967 population estimates
by the U.S. Bureau of the Census
and the numtier of automobile
registrations in each county. The
estimate is compared to 5,825
that were involved in agricul
ture in 1940.
Manufacturing employment in
Laurens County is nowestimated
at 8,673 while in 1940 the numtier
was only 5,590.
The USC report estimates the
total employment in the county at
17,940 while the unemployment
estimate is 745.
