S; • Kfr;^ ;;,.v READY IN SEPTEMBER — Mem bers of the congregation of St. John’s Lutheran Church are hoping to hold their first service in their new sanc tuary in September. The new build ing, located on the Greenwood High way near the new Clinton Elemen tary School, will house both Sunday School rooms and the sanctuary. Douglas Blakely Mrs. Glenn Funeral services were held Sunday for Douglas Blakely who died in a local hospital Thurs day. Services were conducted at New Bethel AME Church with burial in the church cemetery. A veteran of World War II, he was a steward and class lead er of New Bethel AME Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ada Mae Blakely; a niece, reared in the home, Mrs. Annie Lee Brown ofJamica.N.Y.; three nephews, reared in the home, Willie James Williams of Detroit Mich., Prof. Harold Williams and Prof. J. D. Williams of Clin ton; a brother, Theodore Blakely of Clinton; and three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Rice of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Lois McDowall of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. Almeta Brown of Seattle, Wash. The sanctuary will seat approximate ly 200 people. When the church is opened for services, there will be two Sunday morning services so that in terested persons may attend services in the new church and still attend services in their own church.—Photo bv Bill Quarles. Willi© Watts Funeral services were con ducted Sunday for Willie Watts, who died Friday in a Greenwood hospital v Services were conducted at Pedmount Presbyterian Church in Mountville with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Viola Watts; two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Ferguson and Miss Basheda Watts of Clinton; a son, Rodrick Watts of Clinton; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Barrett of Charlotte, N.C. Rev. Webb GREENWOOD- The Rev. Isaac H. Webb, father of Mrs. Ronald Kelly of Clinton, died Thursday, July 25, in a Greenwood hospi tal. Rev. Webb, 68, was pastor of Grendel Pentecostal Holiness Church and a preacher for 43 years. Other survivors include his wife, a son, another daughter, a sister, six brothers and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted Saturday at Grendel Pen tecostal Holiness Church with burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Funeral services were con ducted Saturday for Mrs. Mary Jeter Glenn, 67, who died Mon day, July 22, in a Clinton nurs ing home. Services were conducted at Welch Zion Baptist Church in Newberry with burial in the church cemetery. A native of Newberry County, Mrs. Glenn lived in Clinton for several years. She was a member of the Women’s Aid Society No. 19. Survivors include three step daughters, Mrs. GenevaMillerai Clinton, Mrs. Hattie Miller of Newberry and Mrs. Elizabeth Culbreath of Akron, Ohio; and a stepson, Herbert Jeter of New York City. L O. Thornley Louis 0. Thornley, 69, of 312 E. Florida St., died early Sat urday in a local hospital. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at Gray Funeral Home. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. A native of Pickens, he lived in Clinton for 50 years. He was a son of the late John L. and Elizabeth Hill Thornley. Before retiring, he was a restaurant operator. He was a Navy veteran of World War I and a member of Broad Street Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lois Ray Thornley; a sis ter, Mrs. Taylor (Melanie) Mar tin of Clinton; and one brother. Q. How can I prevent wood screws in an outside job from rusting 0 A. Mrs. Gladys Biggs and daugh ter, Donna, and Miss Michele Martins of West Palm Beach, Florida, are spending this week with Mrs. Biggs’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Pearson. Mr. and Mrs. Author Sanders visited Mr. and Mrs. Bardy Can non and family in Greenville, Sunday. Joy Cannon returned home with her grandparents for a weeks stay. Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Pearson of Sunnmead, Calif., has returned home after visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Leopard near Saluda. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Sawyer and children enjoyed camping in the Shenandoah Acres Valley in Virginia last week. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hughes, Mrs. Ada Center and daughters, Vesta Mae and Bessie were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Sexton in Greenwood, Sunday. Guest of Mrs. Ada Center last Wednesday were Mr. and Mrs. Lee J. Holtzclaw Sr. of Greer. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Camp- bell and children of Albany, Ala., visited Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Adams and other relatives over the weekend. Mrs. Claude Farmer and Velda visited Mrs. Farmer’s brother, Fred Putnam, in the Newberry Hospital, Wednesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Heaton and children, Mrs. L. C. Heaton, Miss Sara Nell Heaton visited Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Robertson in Greenville, Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Jessie Laney attended the graduation of Dianne Ledford Davis at Columbia Woman’s Col lege, Friday. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Caughman and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Owen visited Chimney Rock and Glen-Alpine, N. C. and also visited Mrs. Tommy Caughman’s grand mother, Mrs. Petty. SICKNESS Mr. George James is serious ly ill at Spartanburg Hospital. He is the father of Mrs. Cecil Wooten. Robert Whitsel is a patient at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Ella Harvey has returned home after being a patient at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Freddie Spillers is a patient at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Ricky Poison is a patient at Bailey Memorial Hospital. The construction is scheduled to start in October, and to be completed in time for sea trials by May 1970. This is a part of a company program to broaden and diver sify its activities in oceanography. The formation of a new company, Ocean Search, Inc., to engage in a variety of under sea exploration projects around the world, is a joint ven ture of Alcoa and Ocean Science and Engineering, Inc., of Washington. Benning Arthur Joseph (Arty Joe) San ders participated in graduating exercises at Fort Benning, Georgia, July 26, after having completed eight weeks of basic combat training with DELTA Company, third Battalion, First Brigade, United States Army Training Center. He was made a member <*>f THE “450* CLUB in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in physical fitness, having made a score of 464 on the physical combat proficiency test. The possible score was 500. He is a 1966 graduate of Clin ton High School, and had com pleted two years atCarson-New- man College, Jefferson City, Tennessee. He is the son of Rev. and Mrs. M. J. Sanders, Lydia Mills. He has been assigned to the Engineers, classified as a clerk, and is attending clerk school at Fort Leonardwood, Mo.
