Pitts St. Telephone 833-1028 'Third finger, left hand’ This simple phrase conveys a great deal in spite of its juan- ty colloquial touch.’ However, as strange as it may seem to us to day, there has been no hard and set rule as to which finger or which hand the ‘heart-rings' were to be worn on until re cent history. The ancient Romans thought that they had discovered the 'heart finger'. They taught that the vena amoris or love vein flowed directly up this third fin- gar to the heart: This was sup posed to be true of both hands, bat custom soon began to favor the left. For --- wasn’t this the weakest finger and didn’t it sym bolize woman’s dependence upon her husband? Custom became sanctioned by authority. The Book of Common Prayer of Edward VI (1549) de crees that the left hand is the hand of matrimony. In the 19th Century, when the church ordered that the banns of matrimony be posted, the betrothal ring took its rightful place on that finger as well as the wedding ring. Today, both rings are worn on the‘third- finger, left hand*. Hagins - Bagwell Vows Solemnized ABBEVILLE - The marriage f Dresses similarly were the Miss Riti -rz.
