HOW CAN I?
BY ANNF ASHLEY
Q. How can I remove scorct
stains from white shirts?
A. If the scorch is light, am
not burned in too deeply, you car
try this: Cut a piece of tissue
paper large enough to cover the
spot, then drop a little peroxide
on the tissue and while still wet,
place a heated iron over the
tissue. Often, when the tissue ir
removed, the scorch will have
vanished.
Q. I’ve been using clear finger
nail polish to stop runs or snags
in my nylon stockings, but it
always turns white after I wash
my hose. How about this?
A. Try using beige or gold-
tinted polish, instead of clear.
Q. How can I improvise an
ink blotter when the real thing
is not at hand?
A. Facial tissues make fine
blotters . . . often better than
the real thing!
Q. How can I make a thorough
job of cleaning the insides of
vacuum bottles?
A. Drop torn-up scraps of
paper inside the bottle, add a
little bicarbonate of soda and
warm water, then shake the whole
business well. After this clean
ing job, be sure to leave the bottle
uncorked, open to the air.
Q. How can I remove ink stains
from carpets?
A. Sponge with water, working
from the edges of the stain to
wards the center. Only washable
inks, however, can be dealt with
at home. Best to call a profess
ional for the removal of others.
Q. How can I clean shoe
brushes?
A. Soak them in warm, sudsy
water to which a few drops of
turpentine of mineral spirits have
been added.
Q. What can I do when some
of my homemade soup seems to
have an excess of fat in it?
A. You can usually remedy the
situation by gently stirring the
surface of the soup with an ice
cube wrapped in a clean cloth.
The fat will congeal on the cold
surface, and can then be lifted
out of the soup.
Q. How can I celan badly soiled
ceramic tile floors?
A. Try washing them with one
tablespoon of turpentine mixed
with a gallon of water. This usu
ally does an excellent job. Many
other such tips on cleaning are
contained in my new household
book.
Q. How can I forestall tarnish
ing when storing away silver
ware?
A. By rubbing the silver well
with olive oil, then wrapping in
old table linen.
Q. How can 1 soften the leather
in a pair of inexpensive shoes?
A. Try inserting a couple of
scrubbed potatoes in each
shoe and letting them stand this
way overnight.
Q. How can 1 clean that gummy
residue out of ashtrays?
A. With denatured alcohol.

Medicare
Reimbursement
Is Explained
Medicare beneficiaries may
now apply for reimbursement of
doctor bills whether or not the
bills have actually been paid, said
Carlisle Bagwell, District Man
ager of the Greenwood Social
Security Office.
He went on to say that this
method of reimbursement of ex
penses was included in the 1967
social security amendments.
Prior to this change, the l>ene-
ficiary could claim payment only
if his bills had t>een paid.
Bagwell explained there are
now three ways by which doctor
bills may l>e reimbursed under
medicare: (1) The doctor may
accept assignment by billing the
medicare carrier for that part
of his charge covered by the
medical insurance program, (2)
The patient may pay his bill and
include an itemized, receipted
bill along with his claim for re
imbursement, (3) The patient may
submit an itemizedbill alongwith
request for reimbursement even
though the bill has not been paid.
Because many older citizens
are unused to completing the
necessary form to claim reim
bursement, Mr. Bagwell urged
those filing medicare claims for
the first time to contact the social
security office for help in com
pleting the claim. The office is
at 219'Magnolia Avenue in Green
wood. Office hours are from 8:45
A. M. to 5:00 P. M. Monday
through Friday and from 9:00
A. M. to 12:00 Noon on Saturday.
