If you are an alert, informed
shopper you will spend 10 to 20
percent less on food each week
than one who doesn’t care or is
uninformed.
This is a big statement but a
true one - there are thousands of
items tempting you in today’s
supermarkets. Regardless of
whether you’re purchasing foods
or non-foods, you can cut costs
in a number of ways.
First, buy when the price is
right. Take advantage of weekend
specials. Although only a small
number of the stores’ items are
on special, the savings on these
items are large.
When the price is right, buy
in quantity for future use. Or of
course, if you’re buying perish
ables, buy only what you need and
can use before they spoil.
Read f< iod labels. Knowing how
to interpret labels enables a buy
er to objectively compare dif
ferent brands of the same pro
ducts.
FINAL SETTLEMENT

Compare foods by price and by
weight. The largest size is
usually but not always the most
economical.
If you’re planning your week
end food purchases, consider
some of the following food,
choices. Potatoes from storage
and new crop are coming to mar
ket in normal supplies. Cabbage
quality is good with part of the
supply home grown and some
shipped in. Green Iteans, sweet
corn, cooking greens,squash, cu
cumbers and salad makings are
available. Carrots are a good
vegetable choice. For raw carrot
sticks buy young, well-colored,
small sized carrots. They’re
more appropriate for choking or
shredding.
Onions - another good choice-
are available in several forms.
Sweet Spanish onions are espec
ially good for slicing and for
salads. Select those that are dry
and reasonably free from green
areas and other blemishes.
Fruit choices include several
seasonal favorites - straw-
berries, cantaloupes and water
melons. Avocados, pineapples,
storage apples, oranges, grape
fruit, lemons and bananas are
good selections.
As June bursts out all over, it
is a likely time to find broil
ing-quality steaks at prices well
tielow the summer rate. If ther’s
freezer space, you may want to
buy a few extra any time they
are attractively priced. In some
stores you’ll already see the
higher summer prices for'pre-
ferred broiling steaks.
String shopper demand is ex
pected to keep prices at about
last summer’s levels or a bit
higher.
