A Historic Homes Tour 1 e tS in Bennettsv die and on
ponsored by the Marlboro- the day ol the tour at the
I Fstorical Society will he Bcnncttsvillc Fcmal. Acad-
hcld Sunday March 31 from
2:0(1 to (TOO pm. beginning
at the restored Bennettsvdle
Female Academy construct
ed in 1830.
'The tour route will cover
fiO miles of the most historic
portion of Marlboro County,
including homes and historic
sites dating hack to Colonial
l imes. 1
One of the homes to be
toured’ is "The Begues
Blare,*' site of the signing of
a cartel for the only exchange
n| prisoners during the Amer
ican Revolution. The planta
tion home was built Claudis
Bettues in 1770, fifteen years
bet ore the official establish- j
merit of Marlboro County.
Begues constructed the
home in upper Marlboro
County on land granted him
by King (leorge III. Today
the house contains some or
iginal furnishings of the per
iod and features a rare wul- !
nut panelled dining room.
Also in the upper part of
the county is “Rose Hill,’’ the
Cillespie family plantation
built in 1828 and surrounded
by azalea and spring hull)
gardens.
A three-story home located
near Bennettsville is “App-
pin.” Built in 1867 by William
S. Mowry, a Charleston cot
ton merchant, the house is
built in Charleston style and
has a double.porticoed fa
cade.
‘MAGNOLIA’
Included on the tour is
“Magnolia,’’ a Bennettsville
home built in 1853 by Chan
cellor William D. Johnson one
of Marlboro County's three
sijgners of the South Caro
lina Ordinance of Secession.
The route will pass the site
of the old Court House known
as “Carlisle.” It is where the
original Marlboro County
Court House stood from 1789
to 1820. It was in 1819 that
Bennettsville was founded
by act of the S. C. Legislature.
The town took its name from
Thomas Bennett, then Gov
ernor of the State.
Other sites to be noted in
clude the “Sawmill Baptist
Church’’ built in 1820; the
“River Road,” a route used
by General Francis Marion
during the Revolution; an en
campment site ef General
Nathaniel Greene in 1780; and
the site of the home of John
Lida Wilson, Governor of the,
State from 1822-1824. Wilson
was the author of the famous
emy Restoration in Bennetts-
vdle, locatod on Chcraw
Street. Biices aie $2 lor ad
