Discussing the economics ef
the textile industrv this week ,
Robert M. Vance, president m
Clinton Mills, said. "19t>7 wa-
generally a very poor vear to
the textile industry By the
same token, it was a poor vear
for industry in general
Vance, who also is prem
dent of the South Carolina
Texile Manufacturers \s-o< a
tion, added. " This r; to be
expected, for no longer. I
ever, does the textile nidus
fry have its own personal
cycle. The textile cycle usual
ly leads other industries on a
downturn due possibly to the
long pipeline ”
Vance made his remark
Monday at an S. C. Tex
tile Manufacturers Association
news seminar in Greenville
In discussing textile linanc
ing, Vance pointed out that
the textile industry often r-
vitally affected by "what tin
Federal Government docs or
does not do.”
I After discussing changes in
depreciation allowances and
investment tax credit, Vance
said, “Until our industry had
these aids, investments in tex
tile plants were made only of
necessity to keep running at
all. Business began improv
ing. Technology was so ad
vanced that much could be
gained in regard to costs and
quality by installing new ma
chinery and equipment.
“It soon became apparent
that unless our industry found
a way to pay better wages, it
would Ipse its valued, experi
enced employes. These skilled
men and women, to stay in
the industry, had to at least
be in a position to keep up
with the cost of living. To
pay more, we had to be able
to buy more productive and
efficient machinery for our
plants. This new equipment
would operate more efficient
ly with air conditioning. Ac
cordingly, precision-controlled
air conditioned plants enabled
employes to comfortably ope
rate higher-capacity jobs at
much higher oav.”
