What Made
Washington Great?
By DR HERBERT SPAUGH
George Washington's birth- i
day prompts us to look at
some ot the things which
made him great. Early he!
learned the v alue of self-j
discipline. While still a
youth, he compiled a list of
101 Rules ol Conduct which
had a great influence on his
life and became the founda
tion of his character. Here
are a few choice excerpts
fro -Kington's “Rules of
Conduct.”
‘‘Sleep not when others
speak, sit not when others
stand, speak not when you
should hold your peace, walk
not when others stop.
“Let your countenance be
pleasant, but in serious mat
ters let it be somewhat
grave.
“Show not yourself glad at
the misfortune of another,
though he were your enemy.
“Let your discourse with
men of business always be
short and comprehensive.
‘‘Strive not with your su
periors in argument, but al
ways submit your judgment
to others with modesty.
“When a man does all he
can, though it succeeds not
well, blame not him that did
it.
‘‘Associate yourself with
men of good quality, if you
esteem your own reputation,
for it is better to be alone
than in bad company.
‘‘Speak not injurious words,
neither in jest nor earnest;
scoff at none although they
give occasion.
“Be not forward, but
friendly and courteous; the
first to salute, hear, artfl
answer; and be not peittive
when it is a time to con
verse.
“Think before you speak-
pronounce not imperfectly
nor bring out your words Uy
hastily, but orderly and dis
tinctly.
“Be not curious to know the
EVERYDAY
COUNSELOR
affairs of others, neither ap
proach to those that speak in
private.
“Undertake not what you
cannot perform, but be
careful to keep your promise.
“Speak not evil of the ab
sent, for it is unjust.
“Labor to keep aliev in
your breast that little spark
of celestial fire, called con
science.
While authorities on George
Washington admit that he
did not originate these rules,
apparently these maxims
which had been in use for
many years were taught to
him in school and it was
thought that he was taught
penmanship by the use oi
them.
You may get more infor
mation on this from your
public library. There are 1011
of these rules which are in
the copy which is in my pos-j
session. Here you will find
some of the background of a
great man, the father of our
country.
