Chronicle <s> SPORTS ■MM |HM Ml Teams Have Leffermen PC Battles Indians In Annual Classic On the basis of records and comparative scores, Pfesbyterian College should be heavily favored Thursday when the Blue Hose travel to Newberry for the tradi tional Thanksgiving Day be tween the Bronze Derby rivals. But records and such don’t mean much when the Blue Hose and Indians get to gether. It’s that kind of rival ry. PC takes a 4-4-1 record in-j to the game and Newberry! has a 1-7-1 mark. Newberry’s | lone win came over Freder-1 i ick (23-15), a team which tied PC 0-0 in a Virginia hurricane in the first game of the season. Newberry’s tie (15-15) was with Catawba, which PC beat 21-14 in a thriller. Newberry’s losses have been to Appalachian (21-12); Lenoir Rhyne (54-6); Wof ford (14-10); Jacksonville State (35-6): Guilford (51-69; Elon (24-0); and Western Carolina (35-0fr - In compari son, PC has beaten Lenoir Rhyne 26-9); Wofford (20-7); and Western Carolina, 10-0, last week. The In dians’ last win in the series was in 1965, in an upset against a heavily favored PC team. 4,000 Title Game About 4,000 fans saw Winns- boro defeat Travelers Rest 27-19 last Friday for the up per state class A champion ship on the Clinton High School field. Winnsboro was nursing a 20-19 lead until the final min ute of play when Winnsboro quarterback Ed Ellenburg broke loose for a 57-yard scoring run. Both teams went into the game undefeated and Winns boro Thursday will play Low er Richland for the state championship. Lower Rich land, which tied Clinton 27-27 early in the season, defeated Wade Hampton 33-20 Friday to advance to the champion ship game. In other playoff games, Easley bombed previously un beaten Woodruff 31-13 to win the upper state class AA championship andd will face St. Andrews for the state title. On the boys’ team, gu§ifs Jerry Chandler, Jerry Watts and Billy Horton all are let termen, Chandler is back for his fourth year of varsity competition. At forwards are Arthur Bel cher and Maynard Pierce and both are good jumpers. Also scrapping for spots under the basket are Craig Brock and Randy George. Brock fin ished strong last season but George has shown improve ment. Center position also is undecided as lettermen Ray Rowe, a 6-0, 210 pounder, and Wayne Avinger battle it out. Coach Ben Crabtree said, “Our bench will definitely be a factor in our season as we have several boys capable of starting on a given night.” He said guard-forwprd Kan- ada Roach has improved since last year and may see some action. Thornwell will’ have a ju nior varsity team and Coach Crabtree has some open dates to fill on the schedule. Discussing the players’ transition from football to basketball, Coach Crabtree commented, “Our first week was spent on trying to get from one end of the court to the other without anybody making a tackle or throwing a block.” Lettermen bock for the girls’ team are Toni Hartley, Sherry Taylor, Emma Smith, Kathy Taylor, Linda Fowler, Helen Elkins, Margaret Belue and Dianne Wilkins. The girls lost only one reg ular from last season.
