How Can I?

Q. How can I preserve
the natural color of knotty
pine?
A. By treating it with a
half-and-half solution of
turpentine and linseed oil. A
thorough treatment should be
allowed to dry for about -two
l^ours at least. Any excess
may then be wiped off. Keep
ijp the treatment, using a
good clean brush, until thej
wood no longer absorbs the
fixture.
Q. How can I d spel the
Unpleasant odor that comes
from my garbage disposal
after rinding cabbage, cauli-
flour,’ onions, or other
5trong-smelling vegetables?
* A. By grinding up a half
lemon after all the waste
matter has been disposal of.
qYTIow can I, when skin
ning boiled potatoes for a
salad, avoid having the skins
^ticking to my knife and 1
hands?
’ A. By putting a little short-!
eningp on your knife and your
hands.
\ —- J
Q. How can I remove an
especially stubborn “press-
on” type of knob or dial from
the radio or television set?
A. Loop a twisted scrap of
strong soft cloth behind the
knob, gripping the loose ends
firmly in your fingers. Press
the cabinet front with your
thumb tips, at the same time
pulling firmly on the cloth.
Q. How can I remove Up-
stick stains from my linen
napkins?
A. Soak the stains in liquid
detergent full strength for a
few minutes, then wash as
usual. One complete section
of my new household-hints
book is devoted to the treat-
memnt of stains of all kinds.
Q. How can I prevent
weevils from invading my
canisters of flour, cereal, and
the like?
A. By putting one bay leaf
in each of these canisters.
This discourages the weevils
without the grains’ absorbing
any of the odor of the bay
leaf.
Q. What is an easy way to
make my kitchen sink
sparkling white?
- A. Put a layer of paper
towels over the bottom of
your sink, soak these with
ordinary household bleach,
leave the soggy towels on for
about a half-hour, then re
move them and admire your
glistening, spotless sink.
Q. What can I do if a box
of cereal has become soggy?
A. You can make the con
tents crisp again by putting
them on a cookie sheet and
heating ofr a minute in the
oven. This method is also
firte for re-crisping crackers.
Q. What is an easy and
efficient way of preparing
string beans?
A. Hold five or six beans in
your hand, and cut the ends
off with a sharp scissors.
One snip, and the whple
handful of beans is ready for
cooking.
Q. How can I remedy the
insides of aluminum pans,
which have darkened?
A. Try boiling a mixture
of a quart of water and two
teaspoons of cream of tartar
in the container for about
ten minutes.
O. How can 1 tenderize
tough meat?
A. Try adding a little lem-
! on juice to your cooking wa
ter.
