Gaffney Parficipates
In Vietnam Mission

Gaffney, Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles M- Gaffney of
Rt. 2, Clinton, recently took
part in a highly successful
mission over Vietnam.
Lieutenant Gaffney, a pilot
aboard an AC-47 Dragonsbip,
was flying in support of Allied
ground troops in contact with
enemy forces 27 miles north
east of Can Tho.
The Dragonships dropped

The Allied forces had spor

tbroughout the day, with in
creased activity starting after
dark. The Viet Cong began
using small arms, automatic
weapons and 82mm mortars

nical Training Center, Mem
phis, Tenn. He was first in a
clasf of ten with an average
of 87.14.
During the 12-week course
he studied hydraulic systems,
types and classes of systems,
power system units, com
ponents, selector valves and
actuating cylinders, landing
gear units, operational checks
and troubleshooting.
Chief Wilson entered the
par vice in October 1956.
Hughes In Vietnam
Specialist Four Michael D.
Hughes, son of Mr- and Mrs.
Albert Hughes of Oakland
Street, Clinton, is serving
with the 86th Engineers Rat-
talion in Vietnam.
His battalion recently found
and destroyed the largest
Viet Cong underground strong
hold yet uncovered in the
conflict.
A heavy equipment operator
and maintenance specialist,
Hughes entered the Army in
May, 1966, and was stationed
at Fort Lewis, Wash., before
being assigned to Vietnam in
June, 1967.
Whitmire Assigned
Chaplain Capt. Marion
Copelamj Wbitniire* recently
completed chaplaincy school
in Fort HAn^ilton, N. Y'./and
is now stationed - at Fort
Stewart, Ga.
A graduate of Presbyterian
College, he is married to the
former Dianna Spencer,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert L. Spencer. He is the
son of J. J. Whitmire of
Joanna.
