After a summer vacation the Friendly Garden Club held its first fall meteing Tuesday afternoon at the home of Miss Zelle Crisp with Mrs. H. W. Bryson as co-hostess. Beautiful arrangements of marigolds made a pretty set ting for the meeting. The president Miss Eleanor Dial presided. She welcomed the members and visitors. Mrs. Marie Bannister and Miss Lynn Thomason. During the business session Mrs. A. J. Finley, treasurer gave a report. The secretary, Miss Zelle Crisp read a note of resigna tion from Mrs. John Turner which was accepted with re grets. Mrs. J. T. Hollingsworth ex tended an invitation to meet with her in Oct. and Mrs. C. S. Pinson as co-hostess, gram leaders. Mrs. A. J. Finley.and Mrs. Leonard Gabbert were pro- Mrs. Gabbert presented a devotional on “Awareness”. She read verses from Exodus which tells of Moses being aware of his own needs and of God. She closed this per iod with prayer. Miss Lynn Thomason pre sented a most interesting and informative account of “A trip to Paris” from which she has recently returned. While in France for several months she lived with a French fam ily and learned much of their language and customs. She showed pictures of places she went and of castles there. At the conclusion of her talk she was presented a gift. The hostesses assisted by Mrs. L. R. Adams served a delicious salad plate with punch and lemon cake. The club enjoyed a picnic at Camp Fellowship in July. Mrs. Jim Hugh Austin, Miss Mackie Austin, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Austin, Jr., of Ware Shoals attended the Dale-Aus- tin Wedding Saturday, Sept. 22 at the A. R. P. Church in Camden, Ala. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Hol lingsworth entertained a host of friends and relatives at a supper last Monday evening at their lake home. Miss Gladys Griffin of Greenville and Mrs. H. K. Boyce of Whitmire were Sun day guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Austin. Mrs. H. P. Cromer, Sr. has returned from a visit with her son and family Rev. David Cromer; first she visited with them at Rocky Mount, N. C., and then accompanied them when they moved to Pamplico where Rev. Cromer is pastor of the Union Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Crews of Spartanburg were Sunday guests of Mrs. R. F. Wade: Evangelistic services will be held at Liberty Spring Presbyterian Church Sept. 24- 27. Rev. E. L. Worstall, pas tor of the Friendship Church will preach during this series. Baldwin Gray Court—Services were held Friday for Rev. Walter A. Baldwin, 94, of Rt. 1, Gray Court, who died Wednesday. Burial was in the Rabon Creek Baptist Church ceme tery, with Rev. John M. Lynch officiating at the ser vices. ; He was a native of Laurens County, Rabon Creek com munity, a son of the late Jos eph A. and Eliza Armstrong Baldwin, and was a member of Rabon Creek Baptist Church. His first wife was the late Mrs. Lula Abercrombie Baldwin. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Peterson Baldwin; five daughters, Mrs. W. A. Mor gan of Hendersonville, N. C.; Mrs. J. D. Williams of Green ville; Miss Leona Baldwin of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. J. W. R e c t o r of Jonesboro, Tenn., and Mrs. David Ken nedy of Philadelphia, Pa.; a son, Ben Baldwin of Oteen, N. Friday afternoon, Doris Owens invited a few little school friends to attend a party at her home. The U. S. Treasury an nounced that the familiar Buffalo nickel will be replac ed by one honoring Thomas Jefferson. This is the first new nickel in 25 years. Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Pitts announce the birth of a son, Edward Holland, January 26 at Hays hospital. On Valentine evening Fer dinand Jacobs, Jr., invited 12 little classmates for a lovely dinner party at his home on Calvert Avenue. Mrs. Clyde McCrary, Miss es Louise McCrary, Martha- rene Pitts, Tokie Adair, and Dot Taylor were visitors in Greenville on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Pressley Chaney announce the birth of a daughter, Judith Inez, on Wednesday, February 16. Dr. and Mrs. George R. Blalock and Dr. and Mrs. D. O. Saturday afternoon Corne lia Harris celebrated her 9th birthday by inviting several little girls for a party/ .fk # •. * »■ Fred S- Owens Is Dead Af 53 • Laurens — Funeral services . were conducted Monday for Fred Simpson Owens, Sr., of 113 Barksdale Circle, who died Saturday in a local hos pital after a long illness. He was a native of Laurens, son of Mrs. Bpssie Simpson Owens of Laurens and the late A. R. Owens. He was an operator at Laurens Glass Works and a member of the Laurens First Baptist Church. Surviving also are his wife, Mrs. Martha Hoffman Ow ens; a son, Fred S. Owens, Jr., of the home; a daughter, Miss Judy E. Owens of the home; two brothers, Rev. Wayne Owehs of Orlando, Fla., and W. C.
