Farm Bureau
Dairy Program Has
Successful Year
Farm Bureau’s Dairy Divi
sion, organized in April .1966.
has made quite an imprint on
the state’s dairy industry dur
ing its first year of operation,
says Walter M. Bell, Jr., divi
sion coordinate.
At tiie first annual meeting
for program members, held
on May 25, it was reported
that 545 dairymen out of 677
now in business in the state
are participants in the new
program.
Organized at the request of
diarymen, in an effort to cor
rect the unstable milk price
situation which prevailed at
that time, and had contribut
ed to the loss of more than
300 grade A dairymen in a
three year period, the annual
report stated that this condi
tion had been corrected to a
large degree fr the present
time.
Other projects of Farm
Bureau’s dairy division dur
ing the past 12 months includ
ed a survey, of the state’s
dairymen as to their most
pressing problems. The sur
vey also brought out some
interesting facts as to average
age of dairymen and their in
tentions as to remaining in
business. .
The program is financed by
members through investment
of one cent per hundred
pounds milk sold. Member
ship is strictly on a voluntary
basis, and Dairy Committee
Chairman George • Patrick of
Bowman, calls it the best in
vestment a dairy farmer
could make.
"“I have never considered
the one cent per hundred
check - off a contribution”,
says Mr. Patrick, “but rather
a hard-nosed investment.”
“Farm Bureau has the
framework and know - how
that gets results, enhance our
chances of success by work
ing together mith other com
modity producers in one large
united effort.”
“This is our program” con
tinued Mr. Patrick. “It is
financed and supervised by
dairymen, and its success will
depend directly on our will
ingness to wprk together in a
self-help effort.”
Laurens County has 17
dairymen participating in the
program.
