It takes a wise man of self*
trol to think himself, out of
the crowd when the easiest .
thing to do is to follow it
Some of you may .remem
ber the tragedy of the famous
Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta
which took place more than
twenty years ago. Many lives
were lost, chiefly due to pan
ic, in this fire which swept
through a so-called fireproof
hotel. I’ve just come across
a letter written by a man who,
with his wife, survived this
fire although people died in
rooms immediately around
him. He did some individual
thinking.
When he discovered the
fire, that there was no escape
through the halls, he filled
the bath tub with water, pull
ed down the curtains and dra
peries from the windows,
soaked them in water, and
stuffed them around the tran
som over the door. He re
moved the mattress from the
bed, cut holes in the end,
poured water in it and fasten
ed it against the door by pil
ing furniture against it. He
pulled down the,, windows tty
prevent the flames from com*
ing in frofn thfi qutside. WfybB
smoke seeped'!into the robm
and the heat becami IncrflSb-
ihgly intense, he and his wife
took towels, wet them, lay on
the floor, and breathed
through them. We nr»igh$\ add
they also did some praying.
Looking out the window for
a moment, he discovered an
other couple calling for help
from the adjoining room. . By
a super -human feat Of
strength, with his wife hold
ing him, he pulled them into
his room, one at a time, and
again closed the windows. He
gave them wet towels and
had them lie on the floor.
The fire burned out around
them and firemen rescued
them through the burned-out
halls. He and his wife and the
couple he saved survived be
cause he did clear thinking in
an emergency and did not
panic with the crowd.
It is not always easy to
take a minority position when
the majority is against us.
Most of us are like sheep; we
simply follow the crowd, and
crowds are usually wrong.
We see much crowd-following
today in street mobs.
Young people are particu
larly prone to follow the
crowd because they don’t
want to be different. Many
hoys and girls have conv
menced drinking, and later
developed 1 into alcoholics be
cause they couldn’t withstand
the pressure of the crowd.
Fortunate are the boys and
girls whose parents have
taught them by precept and
example to think and act for
themselves on the basis of
what is right, and not just
what the crowd does.
Too many parents try to
think for their children with
the result that when they are
" grown they do not know to
think for themselves. Parents
could well learn a lesson
from the birds who when the
time comes to do it, after
caring for their young,
push them out of the nest
make them fly for them
selves. Parents must remem
ber that they iwll not always
^oe with their children to think
|W them. They must be
taught to think ior them-
