June is Dairy Month and I would like to pay tribute to one of the many practical dairy operations in Laurens County. This past week I vis ited the J. M. Oeland dairy farm at Ware Shoals and talked with L. C. Adams, manager of the farm. This herd consists of 300 head. There are from 150 to 200 adult cows in the milking string. The Oeland farm con sists of 875 acres. In addition, they rent 400 acres adjoining the farm. There are approxi mately 700 acres in pasture and under cultivation. The pasture program consists of 150 acres of fescue, 50 acres of coastal bermuda with 150 acres of annual grazing. The milking herd is fed silage the year around. In addition, they have temporary grazing. Their silage ennsists of 175 acres of corn. Silage fed to the hbrd is stored in trench silos and is brought in to troughs by two chuck wagons that unload the silage auto matically. Hay is fed each worning along with the sil age. The Oeland farm herd averages 12,584 pounds of milk and' 493 pounds of fat fnr each milking cow. The dairy consists of 60 stanchions where the cows are chained and fed accord ing to production and are milked by pipeline milkers. The milk flows from the cow to two huge stainless steel tanks in an adjoining room where; it is cooled immedi ately.’-From those tanks, the milk is pumped into a large tank truck and delivered to Greenville where it is pro cessed and delivered to the consumers. Dairy farmers of just a few years ago would hardly rec ognize the modern dairy of to day. In times past dairymen did far more labor than they do today. This labor has been replaced by expensive equip ment such as silo unloader, chuck wagons, forage har- v e s t e r, front-end loaders, milking machines, pipeline milkers and bulk tanks. However, there is not a ma- jehine that can take the place pf man because he is required to be on his feet at 4; 00 a. m mnd usually continues work j^til about 8:00 p. m. He Bnust see that the cows are tended to properly and moved worn one pasture to another, ■•ed ‘^properly, calves fed, done, all machinery in irooer order and repair. W.
