THE CHRONICLE
The Alston Wilkes Society
is named for the late Rever
end Eli Alston Wilkes, Jr.
While serving as pastor of
Brcokland Methodist Church
; n West Cotumb ; a, he became
acquainted with a Lutheran
layman, the late D. T. Hite.
From Mr. Hite he learned of
the great need for rehabilita-
: rg former prisoners. When
Tfev. Wilkes was appointed
Superintendent of the Oliver
fjospel Mission in Columbia in
1S59, he became obsessed with
a des ; re to help men Laving
prison to adjust to a new life.
Beaau.se society generally re-
ox-inmntrs, making it
difficult for them to adiust to
community life. Rev. Wilkes
formed an organization to
help these people.
In ]9fi2 the South Carolina
Therapeutic Association, an
eleemosynary organization,
was formed and a charter se
cured. Shortly after Rev.
Wilkes’ death in 1963, the
members of the organization
voted to change its name to
The Alston Wilkes Society and
to enlarge its purpose. Today
our penal institutions and to
serve as an agency of public
information. In pursuing the
first goal, the society aids for
mer inmates in finding em
ployment and housing, helps
it has two major goals i to
work with former inmates of
make available to them re
sources and services of other
community agencies, and as
sists in creating a climate of
acceptance in the communi
ties to which they go upon
release from prison. As an
agency of public information,
tnc society seeks to educate
the public on the need for un
derstanding and aiding the re
leased prisoner and to stimu
late public opinion in support
of needed rehabilitation per
sonnel and facilities in the
state’s correctional institu
tions.
In April, 1966 the society’s
board of directors employed
the first executive director,
II. Parker Evatt, to coordin
ate the entire program with
emphasis on the establish
ment of local chapters in the
45 counties ot South Carolina.
The society presently ha^ 11
county chapters and a mem
bership of 1000. During the
past year it has assisted over
4S0 inmates and their families.
