While here they visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dean at Lydia Mill Community. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kinard, Sandra and Mike, were last Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Kinard in New berry. v Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Beck- om enjoyed last weekend in Greenwood with Mr. and Mrs. William G. Beckom. Earl Connell, who is on a job in Charleston was home with his family for the week end. Mrs. Marietta Burnett and Kevin joined by Mrs. John Luquire, Randy and Donald of Greenwood, spent the * week-end at Myrtle Beach. ON EXTENDED VISIT M. Sgt. and Mrs. Virlyn Davenport, Virlyn, Jr., Julia and Carla of Shaw Air Force Base were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Daven port, Sr., other friends and relatives. The Davenports ac companied them home for an extended visit. On Sunday Mrs. J. H. Wal- lenzine of the Little River Dominick community, visited Mr. and Mrs. F. D. v Bragg, Sr. and joined them in visit ing Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wal- lenzine in Clinton and Mrs. Lillie Belle Miller at Lydia Mill: Last Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smith were Mr. and Mrs. Fay Smith of Blacksburg, N. C. Recently, Mrs. Ola MurTah and daughter. Bobble Jean eqjoyed the weekend in Simp- sonville with Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Murrah. They all en joyed a picnic at Caesar’s Head. Last week-end they vis ited Rev. and Mrs. Tommy Brown and family in Bates- burg. There they attended a “cook-out” at the Church of God at which Rev. Brown is pastor. attends funeral Mr.' and Mrs. Billy Knight were in Marten, N. C. on Sa turday due to the death of the latter’s uncle. Mrs. Knight remained for the funeral on Sunday. IN HOSPITAL B. C. Flow is a surgical pa tient at the Self Memoriajl Hospital in Greenwood. BIRTHS Kinard Mr. and Mrs. Cadi Kin ard of Clinton announce the birth of a daughter on Sun day, April 32, at Bailey Me morial Hospital. She is the former Linda Smith. They have 2 other children, Mitch and Wendy. MISCELLANEOUS SHOWER MrL Mary Rogers Tarlton was honored on Saturday ev ening, April 22nd with a mis cellaneous shower at the home of Mrs. F. D. Kinard at 507 Browning Avenue in Joanna. Mrs. Luther, Frank lin of Laurens assisted in several games to suit the oc casion. Mrs. Tarlton was the recipient of many nice' gifts. Refreshments were served and enjoyed by thd group.' WIENER ROAST On Saturday, April 15, Mrs. Gerald Humphrey entertain ed her .Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church with a wiener roast at her home on the Hopewell Road near Joanna. The members of he class and several invited guests enjoyed the outdoor games. Party refreshments werp served. BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES Happy birthday today, Ap~ ril 27 to Tammy Fuller. The same greeting goes to Vickie Brown, Juanita Wise and G. V. Sellers on April 28. Qn the same day, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bodie will ob serve a wedding anniversary, Leonard Floyd, Bruce Clark and Gerry Long will have a birthday on April 29. On April 30, Betty O’Shields and Harold L. Gardner will celebrate birthdays. On Monday, May 1st Collie Murphy will cerebrate her birthday and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barnes will observe a wedding anniversary. Mqny happy returns of the day on May 2nd to Betty Vaughan, Mary Arrowood, Donnie Ray Johnson, Maur ice Davenport, Mary Nell Abrams, Robbie Ann Lewis and Olin Kelly. Happy birthday to Johnny Waits who whl celebrate his birthday on Wednesday, May 3rd. The state champion 4-H Soil Judging Team from Laurens County left Saturday morning for Oklahoma City Okla., to compete in the National Soil Judging Contest to be Held April 27. The team is composed of Ronald Avinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Avinger of Enoree; Larry Cockerel of Thornwell; and Mike Wick ham, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wickham of Thornwell. Steve Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Wright of Bonds Cross Roads is a member, but will be unable to make the trip due to his studies at the University of South Carolina, where he is a freshman en gineering student. The team, trained by H. L. Eason, Assistant County Agent, won the County Soil Judging elimination and went on to top all teams in the state during State 4-H Club Week. They determine the land capability class and must tell how the land should be treated, what crops to use, and what fertilizers to use. The boys must know soil texture, drainage conditions, depth of top soil and subsoil and fast water moves through a particular type of soil. This is information that will be of help to the boys in later life whether they decide to farm or not. Dr. L. R. Allen, Extension Agronomist — Conservation— of Clemson University is ac companying the team and assisting with the training for Oklahoma soils which are much different from our own in South Carolina. The team will do a little sight seeing on the way and probably shop for souvenirs. Marine Reserve First Lieu tenant Ronald £>. Corley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe D. Corley of 307 Caldwell St., Clinton, received his 31st award of the U. S. Air Medal, during cere monies in Da Nang, Vietnam, at the Marble Mountain Ma rine Corps Air Facility. He is a member of Marine Observation Squadron 2, a unit of the First Marine Air craft Wing. He received the Air Medal for flying combat his Squadron's UT-IE “Huey" helicopter, providing armed helicopter escort and aerial observation support for U. S. and allied ground forces fight ing the enemy below.
