r. Seaboard and Coast Line Get Meroer Aoproval Washington—Merger of two major rail lines of the South east into the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad got final and unanimous approval Monday from the U. S. Supreme Cdurt. The way was cleared for Seaboard Air Line Railroad and Atlantic Coast Line Rail road to proceed with their merger, originally scheduled for April, 1964, but delayed by the legal challenge of other railroads and rail labor un ions. In a brief unsigned opinion, the Supreme Court afirmed by 8-0 the ruling of a three- judge special court at Jack sonville, Fla., approving the merger. Justice Abe Fortas didn’t participate. The consolidated failroad will have 9,624 miles in Vir ginia, North Carolina, Geor gia, Florida and Alabama— with about one-third of it in Florida. One of the principal objec tions voiced to the merger was that it would create a rail mo nopoly in central Florida and the Florida west coast. ACL and Seaboard have have been competing railroads throughout that area, served by no other line. However, Southern continues as a com petitor of the merged line in parts of North Florida, includ ing Jacksonville; and Florida East Coast continues to com pete between West Palm Beach and Miami. Presidents of the merged railroads, John W. Smith, of Saboard and W. Thomas Rice of ACL, hailed the Supreme Court decision. The merger is expected to eliminate 4,250 jobs and re quire 4,400 other employees to move. |i This would occur over a pe riod ^of five years. Gets Fellowship Grint Dixon C.
