Fertilizer is one of the ma
jor cost items in the produc
tion of field crops, pastures,
and horticulture crops. Three
quarters cf a million dollars
is spent annually in Laurens
County for these materials to
boost crop production. A total
consumption of 14,000 tons of
all types of materials is used.
The leading analysis is the
4-12-12 with over 5,000 tons
used each year. This is such
an important item in produc
tion cost that Clemson Uni
versity has , equipped and
staffed a soil testing facility
to assist farmers and others
in analyzing their soil to de
termine the fertilizer needs.
The primary elements in
fertilizer are nitrogen, phos
phorus and potassium. Nitro
gen is the element that gives
the greatest response, but all
are classified as essential. A
great deal of the fertilizer
used is used in the spring of
the year. Farmers are now
fertilizing small grain and
pastures. Many are spreading
fertilizer to pastures and are
applying it broadcast to be
plowed in for cotton. Normal
ly farmers use from 500-1000
pounds under cotton and the
same amount under com. A
somewhat greater amount is
used under small grain.
Where excessive amounts are
used, it is wise to split appli
cations where practical such
a sin pastures.
Our agronomy experts tell
us that lime is very impor
tant. It does more than just
increase yields. For ihstance,
in cotton, lime tends to has
ten. maturity. This is impor
tant inasmuch as cotton farm
ers want to get the cotton out
of the field as early as possi
ble and would like for it to
mature at (me time in order
that it can.be picked and gin
ned before weather damage
hits. Lime is rather slow re
acting and if it is mixed with
the soil, it will tend to hasten
this reaction and will at the
same time be plqped near
the roots of the plants. Pas
ture grasses and legumes re
spond very favorably to lime.
These plants will react more
favorably where the lime is
plowed into the soil.
Com is a crop that requires
high fertilization. Agronom
ists tell us that more and
more nitrogen is necessary to
get high yields.
Gardeners usually fertilize
very highly. It is wise to
broadcast this heavy amount
of fertilizer, plow or mix it
into the soil; and then put just
a small amount under the
row to give he plants a boost, a soil sample and determine
With as much money spent the proper ratio so that the
on fertilizer by farmers and greatest benefit can be ob-
homeowners in Laurens Coun* tamed and so that the money
ty it Is certainly wise to take will be well spent.

Conventions! Conferences!
Fairs! Pageants. The past has
been brimming over with
them! First of all, several
members of the Sentinel staff
attended the SCSPA Conven
tion at the University South
Caroling. Our paper rated
quite high this year and was
listed in the Honor Division
of all South Carolina schools
having similar enrollments.
Now, I must mention the
celebrity we house at CHS —
Cookie Arnold. This active ju
nior was elected to serve as
the 1967 Treasurer of the
State National Honor Society.
Five CHS’ers attended the
two-day meeting at Dorman
High School. Congratulations
Cookie. You’d better keep all
that money straight!
We enjoyed the Press Con
vention. the CHS’ers juked it
up at the “big meeting”; and
the Science Club had a good
trip to the State Science v Fair
which was held at Textile Holl
in Greenville, South Carolina.
And once again Clinton High
showed up well in the compe
tition. Jack Ferguson won
third place in the Senior Ge
ology Division of the Fair.
We are quite proud^of you,
Jack! Keep up the good work!
I must say a little, about
all the spring sports at CHS.
The track team is doing
grand; they’ve broken sever
al past records alrtady this
year. The tennis tepm has
perked up in its recem games
and it now boasts of a 3-2
record. The baseball team is
doing A.O.K. And now CHS
has a new team — a golf
team. For several years CHS’
ers have wanted to organize
a team for golfers, but only
this year haVe they succeeded.
The golfers downed Laur
ens in a match with a score
of 10 1-2-7 1-2 at the Lake
side Country Club. (
For a moment now,, let’s
talk about the “Queen of Clin
ton.” CHS was very fortun
ate in owning ‘‘Miss Clinton”
herself, as well as in offering
three other candidates to vie
for the tile. Miss Lynn Was-
sung, “Missy,” was named
“Miss Clinton'of 1967” at the
pageant last Saturday night.
Let’s all wish “Missy” the
best of luck in the forthcom
ing pageant in Greenville.
We are also quite proud of
Susan Harmon, who was se
lected “Miss Congeni klity’
and Dena Lanford anq Susi
Watts.
