THt WORLDS MOST WIDELY USED DEVOTIONAL GUIDE
Read Jeremiah 23:1-8; John 4:19-26
Behold the days come, saith the Lord, that
I wil raise unto David a righteous Branch, and
a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute
judgment and justice in the earth. (Jeremiah
23:5)
The woman of Samaria, while conversing with Jesus
skid, “I know*that Messiah is coming.” This incident occurs
red more than six hundred year’s after Jeremiah’s prophe
cy. Yet the prophet’s record of what he had been told by
God had survived through all those years. Equally impor
tant is the fact that this Samaritan woman believed in the
Messiah’s coming.
Another prophecy, probably also known to the Samari
tans, is found in the seventh chapter of Isaiah. It is told
here that “a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and
shall call his name Immanuel” — God be with us. This in
deed came to pass as He lived on earth in the human form
of Jesus. • ♦—r—
These words of-the prophets were a source of great
hope for the Hebrews, who lived in turmoil and exile. Now,
as then, Christ is truly the symbol of hope and trust.
PRAYER
We praise Thee, our Father, for Thy wisdom
in knowing that all men could be drawn to Thee
only' by Thy assuming human form in Jesus
Christ. We thank Thee for appearing on this
earth with Thy message of redemption. In Jesus
name. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR..THE DAY
Christ fulfills for me all that the prophets proclaimed.

EVERYDAY
COUNSELOR
By DR. HERBERT SPAUGH
“If we would kick ourselves
more, we would kick others
less.”. This sign was suspen
ded over the famous “kick
ing machine” of T. W. Hay
wood of Croatan, Craven
County, - . C. Haywood’s fa
mous kicking machine ac
quired-world - wide notpriety
during his lifetime. He died in
1955. -
The kicking machine was
built in 1937, attracted thou
sands of visitors from all
parts of the world who came
to Haywood's store where he
had 'the machine and gave
themselves a few kicks. The
invention consisted of a hand
crank turning a large wheel
mounted with four size 11
shoes. By bending — back
side to the machine — and
turning the crank, anyone
could have himself kicked.
Haywood claimed that his
machine enabled people to
have more perspective in
their human relationships.
Haywood’s philosophy is
still good. If we kick our
selves more, we will kick oth
ers less. If we criticize our
selves more, we will criticize
others less.
In His Sermon on the Mount
Jesus said, “Judge not*, that
■ye be judged. For with what
judgment ye judge, ye shall
be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be
measured to you again. And
why beholdest thou the mote
that is in thy brother’s eye,
but considerest not the beam
that is in thine own eye?”
This is just another way
of stating the old law of cause
and effect. Criticism begets
criticism, and hate begets
hate. Carping criticism hurts
the critic far more than the
one he is criticizing, and hate
hurts the hater far more than
the one whom he is hating.
All this is pure negative ra
tionalization. But there are
always two sides to the coin.
He who gives love and appre
ciation, even to his enemies,
is himself helped as much or
more than the one who re
ceives it. *
It is always far easier to
find fault with the achieve
ments of others than it is to
do something positive. It has
been said hat small minds
talk about other people, av
erage people talk about
things, while superior minds
•talk about ideas and ideals.
While we are thinking about
the new year and whqt we will
do with it, resolve to make
1967 one in which you resolve
to love and serve your Lord
and your fellowman. Put God
in the center of your life. In
Communist countries God is
pushed out and the picture of
qL national leader has been
put in His place. The pictures
of Hitler and Mussolini as the
great leaders were held be
fore their people so constantly
that they followed them to
ruin and destruction, along
with millions of innocent .peo
ple. The Communist pattern
is still the same. The lead
ership of a man instead of
the leadership of The Man.
