Thornwell Takes
First Court Win
The Thornwell boys de
feated the'S. C. School for the
Deaf 58-40, Tuesday for their
first basketball victory of the
season. Maynard Pierce and
Lennisr Smith led the winners
as Pierce hit for 18 and Smith
for 15. Tommy Brocit grabbed
14 rebounds and shot 10
points.
The Thornwell boys have
won one and lost two in their
conference. *4
In the preliminary contest,
the Thornwell girls played
perhaps their best game of
the season in losing to S.C.Eb

Cook Joins PC
Fine Arts Dept.
An expansion the music
program at Presbyterian Col
lege was announced today
with the addition of a new in
structor in the fine arts de
partment.
Dean Joseph M. Gettys said
Alan G. Cook will join, the fa
culty next Monday at the
start of‘the second semester
of the 1966-67 session. His pri
mary teaching responsibili
ties will be in organ, theory
and piano.
Cook comes to PC from his
position as organist at the
St. Petersburg (Fla.) F i r s t N
Presbyterian Church. A na
tive of Ohio, he received both
the bachelor of arts and ba
chelor of music degrees from
Ohio ' Wesleyan University,
and in 1965 earned his master
of music degree from the Un
iversity of Michigan. He has
served as organist for church
es in Birmingham, Mich., And
Wooster, O., and^has tadght
organ privately.
Dean Gettys said that ex
pansion of the music program
now headed by Professor
Charles T. Gaines, will enable
Presbyterian College to meet
the needs of more organ,
piano and voice students
on campus and offer a broad
er service to Laurens County
residents who are interested
in private study. Additional
iniormatibn on private lessons
may be obtained from Pro
fessor Gaines.
Cook and his wife have just
moved to Clinton from St
Petersburg. In addition to his
teaching duties at PC, the
CoOks will assume organ and
choral responsibilties this
month at the First Presbyter
ian Church of Laurens. Mrs.
Cook also will be th e new mu
sic supervisor for Laurens
District 55 schools, similar to
a position she held in Florida.

back. 85, who died Thursday,
were conducted Friday at Jo
anna First Baptist Church by

James Mitchell. Burial was in
Rosemont Cemetery in Clin
ton. ,
Born in Edgefield County,
son of the late Eliot and Sal
le Rotten Holsopback, he was
a Joanna Manufacturing Co.
employe and a member of the
Joanna First Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons,
