Franklin, Sr., of Newberry, spent several days the past week with‘her sister, Mrs. Fred Bodie. Mrs. Jessie Austin of Union and Mr. and Mrs. David Wil banks of Buncombe County, Tenn., spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Smith. After lunch they all visited the Smith’s son, Joseph Smith, and Mrs. Smith, then motor ed to the Wilbanks home in Tennessee, returning by way of Asheville, N. C., enjoying the. scenery of the mountains. BROTHERHOOD SPEAKER Monday evening at 7:00 the quarterly meeting of the Brotherhood of the Lydia Baptist Church will be held, with a supper meeting in the church social hall. A. T. Greene, Jr., director of the South Carolina mis sions department, will be the guest speaker. All men of the church are urged to attend. Contact any member of the Brotherhood for information. REVIVAL IN PROGRESS Revival services now in progress at the Lydia Baptist Church will continue through Sunday, each evening at 7:30, with Don Sietman, pas tor of the Webster Avenue Baptist Church in Lakeland, Fla., as guest speaker. W. W. Willingham of the Fairview Baptist Church of Kinards, is directing the music. The nursery is open each evening. Th e public is cor dially invited to attend. By following this method, the birds practice much better housekeeping and there is lit tle waste of water which causes a sanitation problem. They, are fed by an electric feed cart which loads by an electrically operated feed au ger from a master bin. The feed cart then travels down a cement slab feeding the caged birds automatically. In regard to the cages, I asked John Welter, our Area Poultry Agent, his opinion of this type of poultry houses for the future. John said, “There are over a million birds housed in cages like this at the pres ent time, and the number is increasing by leaps and bounds.” The Knights have depended on Mr. Welter to a great extent for basic infor mation in constructiong their new housing system. The big advantage in this new type; of cage house is sav ing labor. One person is able to take care of 40,000 birds in less than one half day. This is made possible, by the fact that all feed is handled by machine. Both feeding and watering is done automatical ly. Very little maintenance is involved in the operation. The cost of construction is appro ximately $1.10 per bird. The farmer has greater control over such problems as disease and mortality in growing out birds. In an operation of this na ture, the birds are grown out by contract. The owner furrt- ishes the housing, equipment, and labor and is paid on a contract basis for his time and facilities. Knight Brothers have the largest caged pullet growing operation in the state. This is somewhat a new enterprise for these men, and I certainly wish them much success. In addition to the poultry op eration, Capers has 150 acres of cotton, a herd of beef cat tle, and an additional poultry operation near his home. The Knight Brothers are planning an expansion pro gram thak will include 12,000 layers providing the pullet growing project is profitable. >These gentlemen have a lot of faith and determination. Friday after a long illness. Surviving in addition to her parents are a brother, Mitch ell Wilkie of the home; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Malone of Spartanburg.
