White Completes Basic Training
Seaman Recruit Robert L.
White, 19, USN, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert S. White of
Elizabeth St., Clinton, has
been graduated from nine
weeks of Navy basic training
at the Naval Training Cen
ter at Great Lakes, 111.
In the first weeks of his
naval service he studied mil
itary subjects and lived and
worked under conditions sim
ilar to those he will encoun
ter on his first ship or at his
first shore station.
In making the transition
from civilian life to Naval
service, he received instruc
tion under veteran Navy pet
ty officers. He studied sea
manship, as well as survival
techniques, military drill and
other basic subjects.
Sunday, November 6, Mr.
and Mrs. Shelton J. Rimer
will hold open house at their
Bali Hai Ranch, located on
State Highway 49 eight miles
north of Clinton, in Laurens
County.
Residents of the county
will have the opportunity to
see one of the few ranches in
South Carolina that special
izes in Arabian horses and
Charolais beef cattle. Having
been admired by many pass-
ersby, Bali Hair is host to 25
purebred Arabian horses,
among these are young foals,
chestnuts, bays, and grays.
The Rimers invite the pub
lic to visit the modern ranch
house and stables and to see
Gazraff, the famous Arabian
stallion, which was rated top
ten in the United States at
the National Arabian Horse
Shod held in Springfield, 111.
The stable is quite quaint
in that it has its own delivery
room with a large picture
window separating it from
the air-conditioned bedroom
of the ranch manager.
The expanding acres at
Bali Hai have been stocked
with 130 head of the pure
white Charolois beef cattle.
These cattle, introduced to
this area by the Rimers, orig
inated in France.
The Rimers’ home was de
signed by Mr. Rimer for con
venience and ranch life. The
ground floor has brick floor
ing, and the living area has
huge open rafters overhead,
with the focus point being the
large stone" chimney.
Stones for the chimney were
gathered by the Rimers from
the ranch. A unique feature
of the home is the circular
dining area. From this area,
one notices the tile counter
tops and custom built wall
cabinets. This entire area is
surrounded by a window
where on a clear day one can
a grbnd review from the Lau
rens County Fair that the
people of Laurens County
have requested to see more of
Bali Hai. For this reason,
Mr. and Mrs. Rimer hope
that by opening their home to
the public they will have an
opportunity to i n t-r o d u c e
guests to the dwellers of Bali
Hai and meeting and visiting
with their many friends and
neighbors of Laurens County.

The Thornwell Key Club
began a new year of activity
early in September under the
guidance of Kiwanians D. S.
Templeton and Reese Young.
Eight new members have
been admited into the club,
bringing the membership to

Mr. Young installed new
officers and memebrs of the
board of directors early in
October, outlining the dutie-s
of each.
Among speakers at meet
ings this fall have been D. H.
Three main projects for the
club have been the sale of
cushions at; football games;
a radio program, “Key Klub
Korner,” Saturdays from 9
to 9:30; and operation of a
refreshment stand at home
footbal games.
Other projects planned for
the year are a Christmas
party for some of the chil
dren at Whitten Village, a
peanut brittle sale during
the spring, and the annual
club “ladies’ night” party at
the end of the school year.
A slate of committees has

dy) Guy III, a 1966 graduate
of Presbyterian College who
resided in Clinton with his
wife during his final year,
has been nominated by the
PC military department for
the Hughes Trophy Award, it
was announced today.
This trophy, presented by
the Hughes Aircraft Compa
ny, is awarded in December
each year to the previous
y e a r’s most outstanding
commissioned graduate of
the senior division of ROTC.
Final selection of the recipi
ent will be made by the De
partment of Army, with pre
sentation being made by the
Secretary of the Army in his
office.
The criteria for this award
include outstanding military
grades, outstanding academic
grades and demonstrated
qualities of leadership, dis
cipline, courtesy, personality
and character.

In Seal Campaign
Volunteers who will assist
with the 1966 Christmas Seal
campaign have been named
by Albert C. Todd, Jr., and
his co-chairmen, David D.
Boland and R. Bland Roper.
The campaign, which is the
annual fund-raising drive of
the Tuberculosis and Health
Association, will begin on
Tuesday, November 15.
