C., Thursday, November 3, 1966 Clinton Women To Assist ABC In Election Returns Two women of Laurens County have been selected to reuort election returns from key precincts in Green wood County to the Amerithn Broadcasting Company hews service in New York in coor dinated on-the-spot reporting of the November 8th general' election. Mrs. James Skinner and Mrs. Lewis Hay of Clinton, are on this reporting team and with other members of the League of Women Voters of South Carolina will man prlcincts throughout the state, having met in Columbia re cently with Dr. Irving Fang, national manager of the ABC news election service to or ganize the news coverage operation. Dr. Fang said South Caro lina stands out in having more contested offices this year than any other state in the union. Key precincts, carefully chosen after a study economic, social makeup and past voting history, will pro duce valuable indications of political trends on election day. Reports from these pre cincts, rapidly telephoned at intervals during the counting of ballots to the ABC massive switchboard in New York, will enable the television and radio network to analyze and discuss on the air projections of voting across the nation, the information will be fed to computers and analyzed by political scientists at such speed that citizens of Ameri ca will know more about the elections at an earlier time on election evening before. Located in the downtown shop ping area on Musgrove Street, W. P. Dixon, chairman of the county party organization, gave the opening ad dress and introduced candidates pres ent- W. R. Garrett for the State Sen ate; Shelton Rimer and Furman Ott for the House of Representatives. Welcoming the candidates to the city was Clinton’s mayor, B. Noland Suddeth. Also present was Mrs. Mur ray Adams, president of the Lau rens County Women’s Republican Club, who presided over the refresh ment table. Following an informal social hour each of the candidates spoke briefly. The headquarters will remain open daily through Tuesday, November 8.
