Representing people, not dictating to them. of Enoree dates back prior to the 1830’s for at that time a grist mill, consisting of two wheat mills and two corn mills was in operation. About that time a mercantile busi ness was established at the present location of Lamb and Hill’s , store. These enter prises were owned and op erated by James Nesbitt, a leading citizen of this section. The old Nesbitt home, one of the remaining buildings, stands on its rock foundation overlooking the Enoree River. The structure is now owned by Mrs. W. H. Irby, and is still in an excellent state of repair. .When it was erected 125 years ago, it was con sidered a mansion^.ft is toddy surrounded by a profusion of vines and shrubbery with large shade trees in the yard and bordered by a low rock wall. The first post office to be established here was named Mountain Shoals and W. P. Thornton was the first post master in 1929. ■ with'the original company for many years till their death. In 1916 the ownership changed, was bought by a Greenville firm, Allen J. Graham, presi dent, and the name changed to Enoree Mills. The present ownership dates back to 1927 with James Chapman of Spar tanburg, president. The plant is now known as Riverdale Mills., • ~ .y • Clinton Goes Ta Newberry Friday The Clinton High Red Devils go down to Newberry Friday night to face New berry High in the current game on the schedule. Two more games face the Clin- tonians, Laurens next week, 'followed by Woodruff, both away from home. Highlights From Clinton High By KAYRAN COX Clintton 20, Thurmond 0 Clinton’s Red Devils romped for 20 points in the second quarter and made them stand Enoree owes its existence to the railroad. The railroad had, previous to this, built a sta tion near Mountain Shoals which they named Enoree. Consequently, the village changed its name from Moun tain Shoals to Enoree. Mountain Shoals was a beautiful and appropriate name for the lovely manu facturing town nested among the hills and valleys. . The name “Enoree” had been given to the river by the In dians which, in Indian lan guage means “River of Mus cadines.” There are to be found many vines of those luscious grapes in the woods up and down the river. The first religious service of the village was held at a school house on the edge of the village. This building is still used for a school. The brick church building now occupied by the Methodists was, for many years, used as a place of worship for all denominations. In 1922 the Baptists withdrew and erected their present house of wor ship. Enoree Manufacturing Com pany under the same owner ship from 1888 until 1916 was headed by George S. Coffin, president, and Franz Engels, secretary. They remained up for a 20-0 victory over the Strom Thurmond Rebels here Friday night. Freddie Tumblin and Dar ryl Hampton hooked up for a passing combination that re sulted in two of the three touchdowns. But it was halfback Gary Campbell who got the Red Devils rolling. Campbell plunged over from the one for the first touchdown in the second period, climaxing a drive of 51 yards. Billy Free>- man booted the point after, -his .first of two for the night. Then' Tumblin and Hamp ton - went to work. The Red Devils' got the ball on the Thurmond 20-yard line on a fumble recovery by Tommy Rhodes. Tumblin • then hit Hampton with a 20-yard scor ing strike. Tumblin intercepted a pass on the Clinton 34 later in the quarter to stop a serious Thur mond drive, and he clinched the ensuing march by tossing another 20-yarder to Hampton for the touchdown. COOK Seaman 1-C and Mrs. Vir gil Raye Cook of Norfolk, Va. announce the birth of a daugh ter, Barbara Joan on Oct. 19. Mrs. Cook is the former Joan McCullough of Norfolk, and Seaman Cook is of Clinton. Congratulations to you, Julia Sadler, on being elected our 1966 Miss CHS. Julia was chosen from three very de serving finalists, Brenda Watts, Judy Templeton, and Julia. It was quite hard to choose the queen, and Clinton High is certainly proud to have such a lovely, popular girl to represent the school. We want to tell the football team, too, what a good show they made on Homecoming. Then add the talented CHS marching band and James Meadows’ fine voice, and you have the makings of a won derful Week-end. * ❖ * The lucky freshmen and sophomores received their pictures today in first home room. The seniors’ and jun iors’ pictures will not arrive until later this year because of all the “touching up” those men are gonna’ have to do.
