THE WORLD'S MOST WIDELY USED DEVOTIONAL GUIDE
Read I Peter 2:19-25
When He was abused he did not retort with
abuse, when He suffered he uttered no threats.
Television has only recently come to New Zealand, and
it is of great interest, of course, “especially to youth. There
fore, one day when we were thinking about Christ-likeness
in a junior high school class, we found ourselves discussing
some of the television stars.
, It was then I asked the class what they thought of the
Texan and Neii Brock, the first a fast-shooting hero and the
other a S'clf-effacing social worker. I asked which one they
thought was more like Jesus?
Some inclined to vote for the fast shooter. ‘‘After all.”
they said, "he fights for the right.” Others remembered
Neil Brock for his compassion, hatred of oppression, willing
ness to identify himself with the lowest and the lost, and the
way he just went on helping when he failed to win a response.
The class decision was that Neil Brock showed more
iikness to Jesus, who said on the cross, “Father, forgive
them; they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus had
the courage that keeps on helping and does not hit back.
PRAYER
O God, our Father, help us on the long road that
leads to Christ-Iikeaess. Give us more of His pa
tience, courage, and rompassiou that we may
represent Him more faithfully each day. In the
name of Jesus, the Sou of Man. Amen.

A hideous throng rush out forever"— POE
AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL **-w EDGAR ALLAN POE’S £
Senior Senator Strom Thurmond
has been described by his political
enemies with many adjectives and
phrases. One heard frequently is that
he is ‘‘a voice crying in the wilder-
y % *
ness.
Let’s look at the record of this
vojee crying in the wilderness on key
issues of paramount concern to the
American people today:
1. From 1948 forward he has warn
ed that massive doses of federal aid
would result in massive doses of fed
eral controls. Does anyone need any
proof that he was right?
2. From 1948 forward he has con
sistently warned of the onrushing tide
of socialism and centralism of power.
Would anyone care to argue this one
with Strom?
T. For six years one man, Strom
Thurmond, kept up a one-man fight to
get production money for an anti-bal
listics missile defense system. Even
the great Senator Dick Russell defeat
ed Thurfnond in a secret Senate ses
sion in 1963 when Thurmond warned
that the Soviets were already deploy
ing such a defense system which
could tilt the balance of world power.
This month, Senator Russell joined
Thurmond in winning this fight on the
Senate floor, calling this one of the
most vital issues of our day.

3. Strom’s voice was the first to
warn the nation—almost a year in ad
vance—that the Soviets were pouring
missiles and troops into Cuba. Final
ly JFK reacted—almost «too late.
4. He warned, and proved, in 1961
that U. S. military leaders were being
muzzled by Robert McNamara. < All
the Washington politipi^ supported
McNamara. Now, who^ will stand up
tor McNamara beside^ «£BJ?
5. Strom coined the t£rm ‘‘No Win”
is describing our fore^gd policy based
on Truman’s conduct, tg the Korean
War and police actions pf the JFK ad
ministration. He w4s»V a Ued wrong
on this in 1962, but win” now is
an often-used term ^describe our
foreign policy and the JwBJ’s conduct
of the Viet Nam War.j •*
6. For the past fen»f« years there
has been one principal .Voice connect
ing the “Civil Bights’] riots with com
munism—the voice df/Strom Thur
mond. Now even >|c*jthern politic

8. In a newsletter in 1963 Strom
warned that the JFK-LBJ adminis
tration was permitting our nation’s
strategic power to be leveled to a par
with the rapidly advancing Soviets
in a fallacious quest for disarmament
and peace. Last month Hansan Bald
win, the respected military editor of
the New York Times, confirmed Thur
mond’s warning.
9. In 1964 Strom called time and
again for the bombing of Hanoi in an
effort to win the war. He, along with
Goldwater, was called a warmonger.
LBJ finally follows this course two
years later after many American
boys have died.

10. In 1965 when others had given
up on the fight to retain our right-to-
work laws, Strom called for a Repub
lican filibuster. Strom got his way
and saved the day.
The list of Strom’s visions and the
chickens coming home to roost could
go on and on. What does all this
prove? It proves that one man with
^courage can, indeed, make a major
ity when his colleagues finally listen
to the “Voice of vision crying in the
