who moved from the upper
Dutch Fork, several years be-
for the Civil War and became
the owner of all plantations
around the town in both coun
ties.
The town is located on the
Columbia, Newberry and Lau
rens Railroad (now a branch
of the Atlantic Coast Line
Railway) on U. S. Highway
76 close to the Laurens Coun
ty line.
Gary’s Station, just south of
Kinards, was the home of
Thomas Gary, an ancestor of
Chief Justice Eugene B.
Gary, Judge Ernest Gary and
Judge Frank Gary. They
were also descendants of
Charles Gary, a Revolution
ary War patriot who is buried
at Bush River Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Pageville Academy, once a
school of high standard, was
located between Kinards and
Garys about one mile to the
right of the main road. The
school, established in 1848,
boasted 100j acres of land, a
four room house for the pro
fessors, a main academy
building, and various other
structures. It was closed at
the beginning of the War Be
tween the States and never re
opened.
Kinards’ economy is cen
tered around its agricultural
and timber products. It is a
fertile farming section as well
as being noted for its catt,le
and dairies. The hub of ac
tivity is Van Oxner’s General
Merchandise Store. Housed
in the store is the post off
ice where Mr. Oxner was post
master for 22 years.
