Clover is the best forage
if you can keep it. in the pas
ture. During dry weather, us

So it is wise to plant fescue
with the clover.
The best crops, however,
are oats, clover, rye grass or
something fast growing that
would stay tender for the
sow and pigs.
Joe feeds his sows ear corn.
The sows get a small amount
of protein to supplement the
corn while on pasturg. He pro
duces two litters of pigs an
nually with his five gilts. He
has the Yorkshire breed and
figures he could cross breed
and get some extra growth
and vigor in his pigs. Most
of his pigs are sold locally
to home owners who would
like to grow out one or two
hogs for home use.
Joe is employed full-time
at Whitten Village. I asked
him if he felt that there was
a place for swine production
in Laurens County. He said,
“Yes, where farmers like
hogs and will grow their own

Scout Troop 197 of Waterloo.
Surviving in addition to his
mother are three brothers,
Jimmy Mann, Beauford.Mann
and Robert Mann of Water
loo, and three sisters, Mrs.
Tony Lynch of Greenville,
Miss Sally Mann and Miss
Mann of Waterloo.
Funeral services were con
ducted Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
at W a t e r 1 o o Methodist
Church by Rev. F. V. Chand
ler and Rev. J. C. Parker.
Burial was in Waterloo Cem
etery.

Nix Hawkins, wife of James
W. Hawkins of 105 Oak St.,
died early Friday morning in
a Laurens hospital following
several years of declining
health and illness of three
months.
Born in Madison County,
Ga. daughter of the late
Christopher C. and Janie Lcll
Nix. She lived in Laurens 40
years and was a member of
the Second Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her
husband is a son, James W.
Hawkins, Jr. of Laurens; a
sister, Mrs. Annie M. Flan-
naghan of Atlanta, Ga.; a
half-sister, Mrs. Chesie B.
Wages of Athens; and three
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con-
ductea Sunday at 3 p.m., at
the Second Baptist Church by
Rev. Grange S. Cothran. Bur
ial was in Forest Lawn Cem
etery.
