THE CUNTON CHRONICLE
SQUAT BUT STURDY
An LCM is bulit for service with a drop-ramp at the
bow for easy off and onloading after it is run up on the
shore. It can carry np to 69,000 pounds of cargo and can
sail at 9.5 knots. Its shallow draft of just over four
feet fully loaded makes it ideal for use on the rivers of
Vietnam.

boat isn’t much in size or
looks but the men at U. S.
Navy support bases in the
Delta region of Vietnam are
happy they finally arrived.
For a Mike boat, officially
titled Landing Craft Mechan
ized (LCM), is the workhorse
of Navy small boats. It is a
vital piece of equipment for
supporting the Navy’s expand
ing counterinfiltration efforts
on the rivers and waterways
of the Mekong Delta in the
Southern part of the Repub
lic.
The powerful, stubby craft,
first used in World War II,
are used to load and unload
ships, transport men and
equipment, fight fire and serv
equipment, fight fire and
serve generally as jacks-of-
all-trades.
But, like other equipment
and supplies arriving by ship
in Saigon, getting the boats
to the various inland base
sites presented problems.
To be sure there are plenti
ful waterways, but Viet Cong
forces are apt to make life
difficult for a slow and lonely
Mike boat making its way
down river.
A convoy was the obvious
answer.
So early morning July 5, six
of the shallow draft Mike
boats, shepherded by the. light
cargo ship USS Mark, set off
down the Saigon River.
One each of the boats was
going to support sites at My
Tho, Vfhh Long, Sa Dec, and
Long Xuyen, and two were
bound for C an Tho the last
stop enroute.
The total journey was over
200 miles and took three days
sailftig on three different riv
ers.
The LCMs were armed with
.50 caliber machine guns and
the, crew carried small arms.

son of Rt. 2, Clinton, was a
crewman on one of the
LCMS which sailed in con
voy from Saigon to Naval
support bases along the ri
vers of the Delta region of
Vietnam.
Lawson, and two others
assigned to the Naval Sup
port Detachment at Vinh
Long, was flown to Saigon
to bring the all-purpose
Mike boat to his base.
The Mark’s five .50 caliber
machine guns and .80 mm
mortar were relied on for pri
mary protection.
Fortunately, the only Viet
Cong activity encountered was
small arms fire which failed
to cause any harm.
The convoy travelled only
by day, nesting alongside the
Mark at night.
The bases to which the
boats are assigned are de
tachments of the Naval Sup
port Activity, Saigon which is)
responsible for providing lo
gistic, administrative and re
pair support for Navy small-
boat operations against the
Viet Cong.
The LCMs, are the final
carrier element in a support i
chain which stretches from 1
the United States across the
Pacific. Supplies now move
from ocean-going transport,
to smaller cargo ships like
Mark and then onto LCMs for
delivery at support sites.
By locating the bases in
land along the rivers, Navy
River Patrol Boats can guard
thousands of miles of water
ways in the rice-rich Delta
region and prevent htfc enemy
from using them to infiltrate
men and equipment.
