Daughter and Dennis, of Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, spent the 4th of July holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bigbee of this city and Mr. and Mrs. King Balkham in Laurens. They were called home due to the death of his brother, Jammie Balkham. Mrs. Edna Heaton spent several days last week with her mother, Mrs. Eskew, who is a patient at Greenville Gen eral Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hun ter and daughter of Belts- ville, Maryland visited his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hunter several days last week. Mrs. L. F. Holland, Sr., of Jacobs Awarded Poole Scholarship William P. Jacobs, 1966 Clinton High School graduate who will enter Clemson Uni versity for the next academic term, has been designated as one of 16 students to receive R. F. Poole alumni scholar ships provided through con tinuing grants from the Clem son Alumni Association. Jacobs, who will study chemical engineering, was valedictorian of his class at Clintpn High. Scholarship alone is the de termining factor in the annual ceiving assistance in memory selection of the scholars re ef Olemson's seventh presi dent, Dr. Robert Franklin Poole. Clemson administrator from 1940-58, Dr. Poole was a Clemson graduate, leading ed ucator and noted agriculture specialist. Each Poole scholar receives S750 per academic year dur ing his college career, pro vided his scholastic achieve ment remains satisfactory. These students consistently earn a grade-point ratio of 3.0 (“B” average) or more. Mrs. T. S. Culbrttb i Laurens -r Mrs. Elizabeth Edmunds Culbteth, 81, died at her horned 722 E! Main St., earty Friday morning after a sudden illness. Native of Edgefield County, daughter of the late Charlie H. and Ella Harling Ed munds, she lived most of her life in AbbevHle but had lived fn Laurens 24 years. She was a member of Abbeville First Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Thomas S. Culbreth; two daughters, Mrs. M. Frank Pope of Laurens and Mrs. kart M. Gatling Jr. of Atlan ta, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. S. L. Ramey and Mrs. R. E. Johnson of Abbeville and Mrs. C. J. Osborne of Greenville; a foster sister, Mrs. Ethel Co vin of Winnsboro; five grand children and eight great- grandcMidren. Funeral sehvices were con ducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home in Ab beville by Rev. Horace Ben jamin and Rev. Bill Ellison. Burial was in Melrose Ceme tery. Samuel Watkins Laurens — Samuel Dewey Watkins, 68, of 819 Fleming St. Extension, died Thursday at 9:30 p.m. after an Illness of several months. Native of Pelzer, spn of the late O. C. and Vicie Leslie Watkins, he was a veteran of World War I and a retired barber. He was a member of Central Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lonnie McDonald Watkins; twjo daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Betty), Chastain of Laurens, and Mrs. J. G. (Jenny) Free man of Columbia; two sis ters, Mrs. Grady Greer of Greenville and Mrs. William Durham of Pelzer; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Kennedy Mortuary by Rev. G. H. Gossett and Rev. Floyd Ellis. Burial was in Spring- wood Cemetery in Greenville.
