THE POWER FAILURE THAT DARKENED THE
NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY A
FEW MONTHS AGO could have resulted in far more
serious harm! One thing that kept from being a
major disaster was the Continuation of reliable tele
phone service. New York City officials said that the
city could have fallen into complete chaos if telephone
service had also failed. However, more than 1300 Beil
p
System central offices continued to operate with em
ergency power. This “back-up” power kept going all
through the blackout so that people could get em
ergency services where needed, and call to reassure
worried friends and families. And, of course, what’s
fcrue of the Bell System companies up East is also
true of Southern Bell. . . including the availability of
emergency “back-up” power if it’s necessary. What
ever the situation and need, telephone service contin
ues as usual . . . consistently reliable, dependable
always there when you need it!
DID YOU KNOW that in 1955 in Americus, Georgia,
the Bell Solar Battery was tried out for the first time
on a rural telephone line? And now, just eleven years
later, the Solar Battery is used as a source of power
on many of our country’s space satellites!
