EVERYDAY
COUNSELOR
By Bishop Herbert Spaugh
“Fortune Recovered From
Garbage Pit” was the head
line of a recent news story
from Athens, Greece. A stock
broker there, Demetrios De-
metriadis, did not trust banks
to care for his wealth. Out
of town for the New Year,
he handed over a bag con
taining gold coins, bank notes
and gems worth more than
$500,000 to his sister and
brother-in-law for safe keep
ing. They decided to go to a
New Year's Eve party and
tor some strange reason de
cided to hide it in their gar
bage can ia the case of burg
lary. The next day they dis
covered that their young
daughter had given the gar
bage can to a municipal gar
bage collector truck, and it
ended up in the municipal
disposal unit, 10 miles from
Athens. By the time they ar-
tived there some 250 tons of
iresh garbage had been
dumped 'over the contents.
For days the ccuple search
ed through a mountain of
rubbish despite a biting frost*
and a snowfall. Finally they
recovered the coins and later
the gems.
We call that a wonderful
ircovery, but how much
more wonderful to recover
living souls covered up in the
garbage of alcohol. I never
cease to wonder and be
grateful for Alcoholics
Anonymous in its search for
men and women who have
fallen into the grabage pit of
alcoholism. I call these mod
ern miracles.
One of the tragedies of
modern living is the increas
ing number of men and wom
en who fall victim to alco
holism and often gradually
lose not only thair material
possessions,' but also their
families, and their own souls.)
Members of Alcoholics
Anonymous are men and
women who have found heal
ing from the dread disease
through the power of God and
the love of their fellowmen.
Their chief aim in Ufa Is to*
draw other alcoholics from
the garbage pit. Their famous
Twelve Steps are the pi ah of
their new life of victory. The
first step Is admission of
their inability to control their
drinking The second step is
to admit to the Higher Power
which can help them. The
third step Is to yield their
lives to that Higher Power,
as they understand Him-
This Higher l»vi »ev, which is
another nafflT -for God, is
their daily guide The 12th
step Is their willingness to
share their new spiritual ex-
(MTience with other alcohol
ics. In other words, they go
cut and dig in the garbage
pits.
Some of you who read this
column may be tottering on
the edge of this garbage pit; 4
ethers may - have fallen in.
Call your nearest Alcoholics
Anonymous club room. There J
are clubs in almost every
city which can be reached
by telephone. If you want a
copy of these famous Twelve
Steps, write to the Everyday
Counselor in care of this
newspaper, enclosing a long,
self-addressed, saamped eh-
velope.
