Belk's To Award 36 Scholarships College scholarships worth $500 each will again be awarded to 36 deserving high school seniors by the Belk Foundation. D. B. Smith, manager of Belk’s in Clinton, explained that only those entering col lege for the first time in the fall of 1966 would be eligible. In Mediterranean Fireman Apprentice James F. Craine, USN, son of Mrs. Lucille Warren of Route 2, Clinton is serving in the Medi terranean with the Sixth Fleet aboard the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Between exercises with oth er Six Fleet units and NATO navies, the Joseph P. Ken nedy, Jr. will make goodwill visits to ports in Italy, Malta, Greece and Turkey. - When her five-month de ployment is completed, the Kennedy will return to New port, R. I. C.—697-6731 Mr. Smith cited the in creasing importance of col lege education, for the indi vidual as well as for his community, as the reason the Belk Foundation has con tinued its scholarship pro gram. He said that because the Belk group of depart ment stores operate under an unusual'plan of local control, they take a special interest in the citizens and the areas surrounding each store. Each store feels a responsibility to contribute toward the better ment of its own commun ity, since it is a dominant part of the business life in which it participates. The Belk Foundaton, estab lished as a memorial to W. H. Belk and Dr. John M. Belk. founders of the Belk mercantile organization, has assisted many churches, dolleges, hospitals and other institutions. The scholarships are avail able to high school gradu ates in the 18-state area serv ed by the Belk, Leggett and Efird department stores. All persons who were graduated from high school since Janu ary 1, 1960, may apply, pro vided they ranked scholasti cally in the upper one-third of their graduating class and will be entering college as freshmen during 1966r Local high school seniors should contact Mr. Smith at the Clinton Belk's store. VINYL CORLON* Armstrong Many Events On PC Spoils Slate Presbyterian College offi a wide variety 'of sporti eevnts on its home grounds' this spring. There will be events that will be of interest to just about everyone. PC w'ill have one of the top golf teams in the state this spring, and they got the spring events underway on last Friday at the Lakeside Country Club against Wof ford. ' The tennis team is not quite the caliber of some of the teams of the past but they will rank near the top of the heap in the state again this year. The baseball- team is on its way up but it is hard to predict its outcome in the Carc-linas .Conference. . The track team also is just beginning to come into its own. Both the track and basebpll teams are looking forward to much improved teams returning this spring. These two teams haxe an ex cellent opportuhity of produc ing the best records by a FC track or baseball team in quite a number of years. All of the P Chome golf matches will be held on the Lakeside Country Club course and will begin at 1:00 p. m. The home tennis matches will be held on the college courts on the corner of Maple and Adair Streets and will get underway at 1:00 p. m. also. The baseball games will, again this year, be played on the Clinton Mill’s Cavalier field and game time will be 3:00 p. m. The track meets will be run on. the college track around the football field directly behind the gymnasi um. The field events will be gin at 1:30, with the running events following at 2:30. There is no a d m i s s- i o n charged at any of the spring sports events and the college cordially invites any and all twonspeople to come out Ip these events. There are many events be ing played in Clinton this spring with the top one being the South Carolina Intercol legiate Tennis Tournament on April 11 and 12.
