The Old Salem Restoration in
Winston-Salem is the most out
standing historic restoration
project in North Carolina. It out
ranks other restoration projects
because of the fact that the
buildings involved have stood
throughout the years, since the
beginning of the community in
1766. Most of the restoration
projects, like Williamsburg and
Governor Tryon's Palace, had to
be rebuilt from the foundations,
while in Old Salem the existing
buildings merley had to be re
stored to be restored to their
original architecture. Fortunate
ly, the plans had been preserved
in the Moravian Church Ar
chives.
Most of the restored buildings
are those used for combined liv
ing and trade purposes. Most of
the skilled tradesmen of Salem
operated their shops within the
confines of their homes. Even
the historic Brothers’ House
housed dormitory facilities
along with sections devoted to
the arts and crafts.
One of the buildings which fas
cinates me is the old Leinbach
home. It was built in 1822 by the
father of Dr. R. F. Leinbach, for
many years an outstanding di
agnostician of Charlotte, now
living here in well earned retire
ment. His father spent the more
than ninety years of his life in
this house. He died in the same
bed in the same room in which
he was born. Here Dr. Leinbach
was born. This old house is not
pretentious, but of modest and

substantial proportions, reared
in the style of its day and place
in old Salem. The Leinbach fam
ily is one of the oldest in that
historic community, and has al
ways enjoyed a name of ster
ling Christian worth.
It has been said that many
families which achieve great
ness cannot prseerve it. I’ve of
ten heard the expression.
“Three generations from shirt-]
sleeves to shirtsleeves.” This'
has not been the case with the
Leinbach family which has al
ways recognized the principle of
Christian stewardship. The old
Leinbach home may be taken as
a fine example of families which
have realized that it takes more

Memories in the Making
A picture ... a frame ... to treasure always.
So she believes I
The fleeting baby smile, the outgrown pair of
baby shoes—these she’ll always treasure.
But in later years not every mother can point
with pride to her son’s baby picture. Memories
sometimes become tarnished with remorse.
So much depends on us.
If we hope always to treasure our glimpse of
yesterday ... we must carve with spiritaal tools
our vision of tomorrow. ..
