lina have lived in harmony for
nearly 300 years. We are not
going to let the bigots destroy
the future of our state,” Dorn
said.
Dorn, a 41-year-old veteran
of nine terms as a congress
man, said the state has a “tra
dition of tolerance” shown in
1928 when it backed Alfred E.
Smith, a Catholic Democrat
who ran unsuccessfully for
President against Republican
Herbert Hoover.
Dorn said the tradition was
continued to 1960 when the
state voted for Catholic John
F. Kennedy for president, and
has been demonstrated through
the years by Sol Blatt, State
representative from Barnwell
County and a Jew, who has
continually been re-elected and
chosen speaker of the House of
Representatives.
Dorn referred to picketing of
Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson during
the 1964 presidential campaign
when her “Lady Bird Special”
campaign train stopped at Co
lumbia. He said the action “by
a small minority to our state
shocked the representatives of
the national press.”
“Any group or any organiza
tion or any political party
which bases its appeal purely
upon race or religion is doing
our state a great disservice,”
Dorn said.
He said the state’s youth have
shown “a superiority necessary
for the further progress of our
state.” »»
“They are demonstrating a
maturity necessary to solve the
campus problems of today.”
Dorn said the state “will con
tinue Democratic” and main
tain a “healthy climate for new
and old industry and opportun
ities for all of our people.”
“In this age of astronauts
and space, there is no room for
intolerance, bigotry and vio
