After man casualties and the
spending of millions of dollars,
it now appears that the United
States has engaged in a colossal
backdown in Santo Domingo.
The Johnson administration has
recognized a provisional govern
ment of the Dominican Republic
headed by a former foreign min
ister in the government of Juan
Bosch, the fellow-traveling ex£‘
President in whose name the re-
bellion was started. Not surpris
ingly, the rebels are jubilant at
the outcome and describe the
latest events as a victory for
their side.
Unwilling to accept a political
agreement which the communist-
led rebels approved, the anti
communist junta led by Gen. Im-
bert resigned. The junta, which
was composed of the people who
had originally resisted a com
munist takeover of the Carib
bean country, had been under
heavy pressure from the U. S.-
State Department. As in the case
of Cuba under Batista, die State
Department used economic pres
sure to break down the anti-com
munist farces.
Perhaps there will be a period
of peace in Santo Domingo. But
who can doubt the outcome of
events in that strifetorn country
if the communist leaders are
allowed to remain. They may
