THE CLINTON CHRONICLE
We don’t hear enough about it,
but right in our own “back
yard” is some of the finest in
land fishing in the United States.
People from other parts of the
nation are realizing it, either
through visits to the Palmetto
State, or from reading sports
magazine articles or viewing
television films.
One of the most popular fish
ing and boaing areas of South
Carolina is the Santee-Cooper,
where lakes Marion and Moul
trie offer a “striped bass para
dise” for the sportsman. Dozens
of letters are written from
throughout the country to our
State Development Board, th^>
Public Service Authority, the
Wildlife Department and other
agencies, requesting information
at^out lodging, eating and camp
ing faciUties in the Santee-Coop
er region.
Residents of Moncks Corner
and other nearby communities
decided it was time to let more
people know about the wonderful
advantages of the Santee area,
so they have originated the first
World Championship Land-Lock
ed Striped Bass Fishing Derby.
Berkeley, Orangeburg and Clar
endon Counties are cooperating
in sponsornig the big “fishing
extravaganza,” to be held Au
gust 6 through 14.
Fishermen from far and wide
are expected to be present, hop
ing to walk away with , some of
the $10,000 in prizes, including
boat, motors and fishing equip
ment. All fish caught will be eli
gible for entry in FieM aad
Stream and Sports Afield maga
zines’ World Championship Rec
ords.
Sponsors of the Ashing festival
hope to attract many of the East
Coast travelers who normally
drive right through South Caro
lina without sampling the fine
fishing delights of Lakes Marion
and Moultrie. There’s no better
place to find striped bass, or the
rockfish as he's known to Caro
linians, than in the Santee-Coop
er region.
The lakes are easy to reach
from a variety Of U. S. Highway
thoroughfares, including routes
301, 19, 17 and 92. Besides the
prize rockfish, there’s excellent
angling for bass, crappie,
bream, pickerel and catfish. The
Santee lakes now hold the
world’s records for black crap
pie and channel catfish.
In connection with the Fishing
Derby itself, all three counties
of Berkeley, Clarendon and Or
angeburg have planned special
events. There will be a plantation
tour out of Moncks Corner on
August 7 that will take in such
famous historical sites as: Goose
Creek Church, Mulberry Planta
tion, MepUn Abbey (a Trappist
M7E.

Both the Berkeley and Claren

golf tournaments for visitors at
their beautiful nine-hole courses.
In addition, there will be bridge
tournaments, fashion shows, and
a pageant to select “Miss
World’s Championship Fishing
Derby.”
Visitors, both from within the
state or outside, will find an en
tertaining time has been planned
for them . . . and the sportsman
can’t go wrong—he’ll have a
week of unforgettable Ashing in
“the striped bass capital of the
world!”

By SPECTATOR
The passing of Bernard Ba
ruch takes away a man of great
ability who gave his Ame and
advice freely for the public good
and gave liberally of his for
tune also. Although thought of
as a New Yorker he was a na
tive of South Carolina, son of a
physician of Camden who served
in the Confederate army.
I did not know Mr. Baruch ex
cept as a great public figure,
highly esteemed by .President
Woodrow Wilson and other Presi
dents.
I had a letter from him once,
some years ago. Mr. Baruch had
built a sort of retreat near Kings-
tree. I read that he had been
hunting but hadn’t found any
birds, so I invited him to come
to Clarendon to hunt on my land
and on neighboring tracts.
Mr. Baruch, in a very cordial
letter explained that he hunted
primarily for the exercise out of
doors.
Mr. Baruch’s life was a useful
one; though he prospered finan
cially to a marked degree he
was greater than his money and
left a record of great service to
our nation and mankind.

Memories in the Making
A picture .. . t frame ... to treasure always.
So the believes l
The fleeting baby smile, the outgrown pair of
baby shoes—these she’ll always treasure.
But in later years not every mother can point
with pride to her son’s baby picture. Memories
sometimes become tarnished with remorse.
So much depends on us.
If we hope’’always to treasure our glimpse of
yesterday ... we must carve with spiritual tools
our vision of tomorrow.
