Camp Lejeune, N. C.

struction in small unit tactics,

tions and other subjects relat
ed to the Marine infantryman.
Telephone Progress
In Clinton Area
Is Noted By Martin
Demand for new telephone ser
vice during the first six months
of this year in Clinton and in
South Carolina is running far
above that of any other similar
period in Southern Bell’s his
tory.
D. H. Martin, Clinton’s South
ern Bell manager, says 217 tele
phones have been added in Clin
ton and Joanna since January 1.
Approximately 24,000 have been
added in South Carolina since
the first of the year, compared
to only 14,000 for the same period
last year.
Southern Bell now serves near
ly 558,000 telephones in the state.
“And we only installed our 500,-
000th one on January 7, 1964,”
Martin said. “This represents
about a 12 per cent gain over
the last 18 months, which is out
standing.”
Martin added that the Telp--
phone Company is in the midst
of a $3.3 million construction
program in the SpartanbuFg dis
trict. State wide, some $33.9 mil
lion will be spent for telephone
service improvement and ex
pansion.
Major construction program
projects underway in this area
include additional facilities be
ing added in the southern
western sections of Clinton at a
cost of $25,000.00.
The fact that telephone service
demand is up more than 70 per
cent over last year is a good
indicator of the prosperity in
South Carolina’s economy, Mar
tin says. “Some Southern states
are experiencing an increase of
only 5 or 10 per cent over last
year. This represents a ‘depres
s-on’ compared to the way things
are growing here.”
