HOME FROM KOREA Sp4 Charles J. Franzen is spending a leave with his pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Fran zen. He has lust returned from Korea after being on duty there for 13 months. CELEBARTES BIRTHDAY Buddy Murrah was honored with a birthday dinner last Sun day just one day before his birthday, which was the 3rd. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mur rah, were hosts for the affair. Other guests included Mrs. Mur rah, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Brown and sons, Tommy, Tony and Billy of Clinton. He receov. ed several nice gifts. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT WEBB Mr. and Mrs. Dessie Webb of Clinton, anounce the birth of a daughter, Sheila Kay, on Tues day, May 4, at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Webb is the for mer Shirley Alexander of Jo anna. They have one other daughter, Connie. BIRTHDAYS and wedding Mary Jo Holsonback will have a birthday Thursday, May 13. May 14th Ernest Osborne, Anne Rice, F. C. Rowe and No- omi Schumpert will celebrate birthdays. Birthday greetings go to Deb bie Thomas and Otis Lever on May 15. Many happy returns of the day to Mr. and Mrs. John Earl O’Shields of Atlanta, Ga., who will observe a sary on May 19. birthdays are Mildred Gene Bishop. On Monday, Mar 17, Claude Lawson, Mia Larry Summers and Thomas^ave birthdays. Happy birthday to Fred on May 19. Friends will be interested to know Mrs. Jean Bridges and daughters, Duffie, Jack and Jane, are at the home of her pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tem pleton, Sr., after spending over a year in the Canal Zone. They returned in March. M-Sgt. Mar vin Bridges is still stationed there. Mrs. Dan Krby spent a week recently in Orlando, Fla., with S-Sgt. and Mrs. Buddy Kirby and family. One of the grand children, connle, returned with her for a two weeks visit. The Kirbys were here over the week- children, Connie, returned with them. Other Sunday dinner guests were Mrs. Edward Kir by and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ad ams of Laurens. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Young were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Newt Ellis and attended church services with them at the First Baptist Church in Iva. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Moon and Marie visited relatives in Green ville Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. White and Margaret attended a Mother’s day dinner for Mrs. Ethel White in Cross Hill Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. James Douglas visited Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Gil liam and daughter, Frankie, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Douglas in Ninety-Six Sunday. Mrs. Louise Berry of Green ville, was a Sunday guest of Mrs. L. L. Simpson. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Poag on Friday and Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Poag of Burlington, N. C. On Sunday afternoon the Poags visited Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Gambrell in Nin ety Six. Mrs. Mary Boyce and Mary Ellen Rogers were in Rock Hill last Saturday visiting Elaine Boyce at Winthrop College, and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Misenheimer and Mel. Mr. and Mrs. LcRoy Couch spent the week-end in Spartan burg with Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Reeves and family, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reeves and family and Mrs. Essie Reeves. They went especially to attend the ‘‘Miss Spartanburg” contest held there Saturday night in which a niece, Miss Ann Reeves, was a partici pant. Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Hill and children of Spartanburg, spent Mother’s day with the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Franzen. Mr. and Mrs. James Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sineath, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bishop were part of the group which attended the ‘‘Thursday Night Bowling League” supper on Saturday eve ning at the Panorama Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Boyce and Cherry of Aiken, were visi tors over the week-end of Mr. and Mrs. Mason Rowland and Mr. end Mrs. Roy Boyce. Bill Thomas of Greenwood, also was a guest of the Rowlands and while here visited other relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. James Brown and Debbie were Sunday guests of Mrs. Janie Outz in Newberry. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Godfrey were Sunday guests of the lat ter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Per ry Dukes, in Batesburg. Guests over the week-end of Mr. ard Mrs. Earl. Sineth and Darrin were Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Scott of Charleston and Mr. and Mrs. Rennie Sineath of Clinton. Johnson Completes First Training Course Marine Private Harold N. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. Johnson of Joanna, recently graduated from Marine recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Is land. Parris Island is the recruit training center for Marines who enlist east of the Mississippi River. During his ,11 weeks of recruit training under veteran non-com missioned officer drill instruc tors, he learned small arms markmanship, bayonet fighting, and methods of self-protection, as well as receiving instruction in military drill, history and traditions of the Marine Corps, and other academic subjects. He wiU be assigned to C a m p Lejeune, N. C., for at least four weeks of advanced infantry com bat training before being assign ed to a school or to a Marine combat or support unit. A Sunday guest of Mr. and Mrs. George Childers and Vickie was Mrs. Joyce Epting of Co lumbia. Out of town dinner guests of Mrs. McNeal Trotter were Mrs. L. H. Rinehart, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Rinehart, Jr., and daugh- tres of Batesburg. Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Marion Hamm and Morton were Mrs. Cancie Arnold, Mr. and Mrs. Mack Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Martin of Clinton, and Mr. and Mrs. Maxie Brown and Christy of Rock Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Dock Buchanan enjoyed a family get-together at their cottage on Lake Greenwood on Sunday. Another couple to at tend from Joanna was Mr. and Mrs. Luke Clark. It was held es- County Cotton Farmers Sign Up To Reduce Acreage Some 121 cottc;. producers in Laurens County have signed up to take 1487 acres out of cotton production this year under the domestic cotton allotment pro gram, Fred S. Stoddard, chair man, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Com mittee, has announced. The sign up for program participants stated February 8 and ended April 16. The Laurens County farms signed to date have effective cot ton allotments totaling 4553 acres and domestic allotments totaling 3066 acres. Cotton growers who take part in the program agree to plant within their domestic acreage allotment (for most farms, about 65 per cent of the farm’s effec tive allotment). Participating farmers become eligible for a price-support payment of 4.35 cents a pound on the normal yield per acre determined for the farm times the acreage planted for harvest. In addition, they will be eligible for price-support loans 29 cents a pound for middling 1- inch at average location on all cotton produced. The signup was conducted for the operators of farms whose domestic allotments are less than their effective allotments; in gen eral, these are farms with an effective cotton allotment of more than 15 acres. Growers on farms with allotments of 15 acres or less are eligible for the additional price support in thp 1 form of payments without sign ing up provided their cotton acre age is within the farm’s domes tic allotment.
