County Cotton
Farmers Sign Up
To Reduce Acreage
Some 121 cottc;. producers in
Laurens County have signed up
to take 1487 acres out of cotton
production this year under the
domestic cotton allotment pro
gram, Fred S. Stoddard, chair
man, Agricultural Stabilization
and Conservation County Com
mittee, has announced. The sign
up for program participants
stated February 8 and ended
April 16.
The Laurens County farms
signed to date have effective cot
ton allotments totaling 4553 acres
and domestic allotments totaling
3066 acres.
Cotton growers who take part
in the program agree to plant
within their domestic acreage
allotment (for most farms, about
65 per cent of the farm’s effec
tive allotment). Participating
farmers become eligible for a
price-support payment of 4.35
cents a pound on the normal
yield per acre determined for the
farm times the acreage planted
for harvest. In addition, they will
be eligible for price-support loans
29 cents a pound for middling 1-
inch at average location on all
cotton produced.
The signup was conducted for
the operators of farms whose
domestic allotments are less than
their effective allotments; in gen
eral, these are farms with an
effective cotton allotment of
more than 15 acres. Growers on
farms with allotments of 15
acres or less are eligible for the
additional price support in thp 1
form of payments without sign
ing up provided their cotton acre
age is within the farm’s domes
tic allotment.
