Conservation
Notes
By BILLY B. ABERCROMBIE
‘Conservation is being applied
at an accelerated rate in the
Duncan Creek Watershed Con
servation District. To date 386
acres of severely eroded, gullied
land have been planted to trees
or grass, three miles of road-
banks have been treated, two
flood-water retarding structures
constructed, and 93 additional
landowners have been assisted
in developing complete soil and
water conservation planes,” ac
cording to Billy R. Abercrombie,
Soil Conservation Service.

Duncan Creek Watershed Dia- Creek will be done this summer,
trict, the Laurens County Soil
Conservation District and Soil
Conservation Service. The water
shed was put into operation in
September, 1962. The planned
works of improvement are over
all ahead of schedule.
Brush and dirt check dams
planted to love grass were in
stalled in the gullies of 2S3 acres
of severely eroding land that
was planted to loblolly pines,
piis land was on 40 different
/arms. The unsightly,' non-pro
ducing land was not only taking
away additional acres each year
as it eroded, but was causing
trouble to the bottom lands by
filling up the creeks thereby in
creasing the flooding hazard.
The South Carolina State Com
mission of Forestry provided
planting and site preparation as
sistance.
Severely eroding areas of
cropland and pasture land total
ing 13 acres have been smoothed
and seeded to grass. Forty-two
more acres are being seeded-
now.
Through a cooperative agree
ment with the South Carolina
Highway Department the road
hanks on South Carolina High
way 72 from the Junction of
South Carolina 76 to Tip Top
have been sloped and seeded to
sericea-Bermuda. Four miles of
road hanks that are actively
eroding on South Carolina 306
from the junction of South Caro
lina 276 to South Carolina 40
are now being sloped and will
be seeded to grass. Plans are
also completed for treating
about six miles of road banks on
Soil borings are now being made
at the site of the flood-water re
tarding dam to he constructed
on Beard’s Forte.
The over-all appearance of the
Duncan Creek Watershed area is
gradually being changed. Gul
lies, bench type eroding terraces,
washed-out areas within the
woodlands, old roadbeds, road
banka, etc., have and are being
bulldozed and vegetated. The <
flooding of Sand Creek has been
drastically reduced. Additional
acres of land have been ter
raced, contoured, and put under
a conservation rotation system.
Other areas have been planted
to pasture, hay or trees. The job
is well underway, but there still
remains much to be done. The
watershed program, however,
has established a means, techni
cal and financial, to accomplish
the needed conservation treat
ment.
