New Car Damaged In Collision
A collision late last Wednesday afternoon damaged
a new Dodge automobile even before a license tag could
lie attached to it. The mishap occurred as the pickup
truck and the Podge were proceeding north on North
Adair Street. James Calhoun Young, 31, of Rt. 2,
driver of the pickup, attempted to turn left into Cope
land Street and collided with the Dodge driven by Bob
by Lee Lewis, 31, of North Sloan Street, investigating
officers stated. Young was charged with failing to

staff, which now includes only
Gault and Line Coach Billy Tiller
for spring practice duty. End

announced his plans to join the
University of South Carolina
staff, and Assistant Conch Art
Musselman is busily engaged as
head basketball mentor.
A bright spot in the gridiron
picture is the announcement that
Leighton Grantham, PC’s All
state quarterback and season
passing record-holder, will return
next fall to make use of his final
season of eligibility. He will port-
pone possible June graduation
until next January.
For the current practice ses
sions, however, there’s no quar
terback with any game experi
ence on the Blue Hose roster.

Held For Grand Jury
In Death of Harris
A coroner’s jury here Wed-
n e s d a y recommended that
James Capers Gregory, SO, be
held for grand jury action in con
nection with the gunshot death
of Lester C. Harris, 42-year-old
textile worker.
Harris’ body was found Dec.
28 about 1:45 n. m. on n dimly
lit street near his home in the
Lydia Mill community. Greg
ory was charged with murder
two days later.
Laurens County Sheriff R. Eu
gene Johnson said Wednesday
that Gergory is in Columbia un
dergoing a 30-day period of ob
servation at the State Hospital.
Two of three men who spot
ted Harris' body as they re
turned from a coon hunt testi
fied at the inquest conducted
by Coroner Marshall Pressley
at city hall.
Ralph Duncan of Union and
Bruce Bagwell of Clinton testi
fied they saw the body from
their car. Bagwell said he rec
ognized Harris, whom he knew.
The men testified they did not
stop but continued to the Clin
ton Police Department where
they reported what they had seen
and led officers to the body.
Jimmy Earl Gregory, Greg
ory’s married son, testified that
the last time he saw his father
Dec. 27 was about 6:30 p. m. at
the store his father operated in
the Lydia Mill section. He tes
tified that he reported to his
job later that nii^it and was
told about 1:15 a. m. that he
was wanted at home.
He testified that when he ar
rived at his home he found his
father’s truck there but his own
car was missing. He said he
drove the truck to his father’s
home where he found his fam
ily.
Young Gregory said his father
told him “they were trying to
rob me. I shot one of them.”
Gregory said his father, told him
to “go on down there.”
Gregory testified that he and
his brother, Doug Gregory, went
to their fathers' stow but saw
no one. He said he then noticed
for the first time that the right
window of the truck was broken
out and that glass was lying m
the truck seat
When he returned to his fath
er’s home, Gregory testified,
be discovered and removed his
own .22 caliber revolver from
his father's pocket. He said three
empty cartridges and three that
had not been fired were in the
weapon.
Gregory said he and his broth
er later found Harris’ body in
the street. When he saw the
bullet wound, he testified, he
sent his brother to find Ralph
Riddle, sheriff’s mill deputy. Be
fore the two returned, BagweB,
Duncan and city officers arriv
ed, be said.
Riddle took the stand briefly
to testify that Doug Gregory
awakened him at fate home and
reported to nun “that a man
had been killed over there.”
He said when he arrived at the
scene, city police were present
•and that he notified Sheriff John-
son’s office.
A doctor’s statement was reed
which stated that Harris died
within two or three minutes af
ter a “perforating wound of the
pulmonary artery.”
