declining health.
A native of Anderson County
•who Uved in Clinton tbs past 15
years, he* was the son of the
late John Hampton and Mattie
Trotter Burgess. He was em
ployed in the weaving depart
ment of Clinton Cotton Mill and
was a member of Calvary Bap
tist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Hasel Whitmore Burgess; five
daughters, Mrs. Ellamae Bag-
well of Clinton, Mrs. Harriett
CroweU of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs.
Shirley Humphries of Clinton,
Miss Kaye and Miss Faye Bur
gess of the home;* four sisters,
Mrs. Nora Hemp and Mrs. Sar
ah Blackston of Charlotte, N. C.,
Mrs. Frances Caulton'and Mrs.
Beula Johnson of Woodruff;
four brothers, Henry Burgess of
Spartanburg, Taff and Sampson

Funeral services were con
ducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cal
vary Baptist Church by Rev.
J. W. Spillers and Rev. James
Williams. Burial was in Rose-
mont Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joel R. Cox,
Spike. Webb, Evans Lever, Carol
Campbell, J. R. Reynolds and
Jim Burnett.

Missionary To Speak
Af Lutheran Church
The Rev. Jerry Livingston,
missionary to Japan, will speak
at St. John’s Lutheran Church
Monday evening, Jan. 25, at
7:30.
Born and reared in West Col
umbia, Mr. Livingston was grad
uated from the University of
South Carolina and the Lutheran
Theological Southern Seminary.
Mr. and Mrs. Livingston, with
one daughter, went to Japan in
1969. The first two years were
spent in study of the Japanese
language in toe capital city of
Tokyo. Thereafter, Mr. Living
ston was assigned to a parish of
the Japan Lutheran Church sit
uated in Sendai, a sizeable com
munity north of Tokyo.
On their first' furlough, and
now with a family of four child
ren, the Livingstons are spend
ing a year in West Columbia and
Cayce. They will return to Japan
within the next several months.
Dr. E. B. Keisler, interim pas
tor of St. John’s, states that it is
the hope of his congregation that
members of other local churches
will avail themselves of the op
portunity of hearing Mr. Living
ston. An informal coffee nour
will follow the program.

Maher, died at a local hospital
early Saturday after a sudden
illness.
She was a native of Clinton,
