area began during the 1750’s, as
a direct result of the important
Saluda Old Town Treaty, where
by the Cherokees deeded a huge
section of land to the British. A
group of men met at the home of
Alexander McDougal in June of
1785 to formally organize a gov
ernment for Union County.
The County was formed from
the old Ninety-Six -District, and
named for “Union Church,” built
near the present site of the town
of Union. The church was used
in common by early settlers of
the Episcopal, Presbyterian and
Quaker faiths. Earliest perman
ent residents were for the most
part from Virginia and Pennsyl
vania.
The friendly people of Union
and the county area have always
been noted for their patriotism
and service. General Thomas
Brandon of the American Revo
lution was from Union County,
as well as Sergeant Jasper, the
soldier of the'Revolution who re-
Ih the battle of Kings Mountain
in 1780 fired the shot killing Bri
tish Commander Major Forgo,
son, causing his troops to sur
render. This county has pro
duced tour South Carolina Gov
ernors: David Johnson, William
Gist, Thomas Jeter and John
Sheppard.
A few miles southwest of what
is now the town of Union, on the
Cross Keys Road, was fought the
Battle of Blackstock in 1780.
Although a victory for the
American forces. General Thom
as Sumter was seriously wound
ed in the fighting. Later the
same year, near what is now
Carlisle, the BatUe of Fish Dam
Ford ensued. v It was here that
General Sumter’s troops defeat
ed part of Cornwallis’ British
forces, under command of a
Major Wemyss, who was taken
prisoner.
You’ll find the old Dawkins
House on a court by the same
name in the town of Union. This
was the temporary site of gov
ernment for South Carolina after
Sherman’s troops occupied and
burned Columbia in 1866 during
the War Between the States. The
house was the residence of
Judge Thomas M. Dawkins.
On U. S. Highway 176, a short
distance south of Union, you’ll
find the marker indicating the
site of Otterson’s Fort, which
was used as a refuge for settlers
during the Cherokee War of 1759-
’61. It was believed named for

One of the most historic frac
tures in the county Is the old
Cross Keys House, located at the
community of the same name,
about 16 miles from Union. The
house was a well known stopover
point on a stagecoach route dur
ing the Civil War. President Jef
ferson Davis and party stopped
here while fleeing from the Con

after the fall of the city to Sher.
