the Convention dearly and ex

not within the discretion of the
trustees: they had their orders
and they deliberately refuse to
obey, thereby openly defying the
State Convention.
Suppose the General Assembly
of South Carolina should adopt a
rule can you think of open defi
ance by the trustees?
In a day of finer sensibility
a Board finding itself unable to
obey a superior order would
have resigned.
Whether the Board hopes to
attract more money by its
course is not at all pertinent to
the question. The Board was
elected by the Convention and Is
entirely subservient to the clear
mandates of the whole Baptist
fellowship as represented by the
State Convention of Baptists.

The Twelve

Christmas!
r > *
is it the days between
Thanksgiving and Decem

twelve days which extend
through January 6—Epiph
any Day or the Visit of the
Wise Man from the East
Christmas speaks of God’s
desire to meet us, wherev
er we are, now, in the mid
dle of everytldng. These
twelve days provide a
chance to respond to the
“meeting” not just with
our words but also with our
lives. God is with us more
than the twelve days; he is
with us twelve months of
the year, always. The
Christian Year, represent
ed now in the Twelve Days
of Christmas, can order the
happenings Of daily life in
Christmas—God With Us the miracle of faith born in
Christmas Season empha- , us. Knowing this we can
sizes this sort of recollec- dare to involve ourselves
tion. Christmas is not a deeply into the “strange-
season of one day; neither ness” all the time.
(All Saints Episcopal Church will celebrate the Feast of
the Epiphany in January. Watch for an announcement
next week.) i
Year
“How shall we sing the
Lord’s song in a strange
land?” asked the psalmist
in exile with his people in
Babylon. Many of us read
ing these words recognizes
in them our frequent com
plaint: “How is the Lord’s
Word to be taken TO
DAY?”
A tried and true way of
bringing ourselves and oth
ers to an awareness of
God’s presence in the events
of everyday life, in the mid
dle of twentieth century
“strangeness,' is to recall
the acts and Teachings of
Christ Jesus in the plan of
the Christian Year.

The entire message of America’s astronauts has not
yet been deciphered. Parts of it stOl lie locked within instru

But ws are learning, and ws might say that the astronauts
are our teachers.
Many, many years ago there was another great Teacher,
and Hit massage is still being revealed through faith to the
mind of mankind. His massage is the path of the Croat . . .
the path to sternal life.
But where do ws find our instructions, our briefing?
What instruments can ws use to discover this message for
